Eagles Hire Former Packers Coach for Key Offensive Role

The Eagles take a bold step into uncharted territory by naming the relatively inexperienced Sean Mannion as their new offensive coordinator.

The Philadelphia Eagles have their new offensive coordinator - and it’s a name that might raise a few eyebrows: Sean Mannion. After a relatively quick search, the Eagles are betting on a young, rising mind to help reshape their offense, hiring Mannion away from his post as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach.

From Clipboard to Playbook: Mannion’s Rapid Rise

Mannion’s coaching résumé is short but intriguing. Just a year removed from his playing days - his last NFL snaps came with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 - the 33-year-old made the leap to coaching in 2024 with the Packers.

In Green Bay, he worked closely with Jordan Love, who took a big step forward as the team’s full-time starter, and Malik Willis, who filled in capably when called upon. While it’s hard to quantify exactly how much of that development is directly tied to Mannion, the Eagles clearly saw enough to believe he can bring that same quarterback-friendly approach to Philadelphia.

That said, there’s a notable caveat: Mannion has never called plays at the NFL level. In fact, he’s only been coaching for two seasons. That lack of experience makes this hire a bold move - but also one that could pay off if Mannion’s trajectory continues its upward trend.

Why the Eagles Made the Move

Head coach Nick Sirianni and the Eagles’ brass had options. Mannion was one of several candidates to get a second interview, including Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, Buccaneers OC Josh Grizzard, and Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson. All three brought more experience to the table, but Sirianni ultimately chose Mannion - a decision that suggests the Eagles are prioritizing fresh ideas and quarterback development over a traditional résumé.

It’s worth noting that Mannion’s coaching tree is already impressive. He played under Rams head coach Sean McVay and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell - two of the most respected offensive minds in the league - and then coached under Matt LaFleur in Green Bay. That’s a trio of offensive innovators, and Mannion’s exposure to their systems likely played a role in Philadelphia’s decision.

What’s Next in Philly?

Mannion steps into a role that was vacated by Kevin Patulo, who was let go on January 13 after just one season as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. Patulo’s tenure was marred by inconsistency and underperformance, particularly down the stretch. The Eagles are hoping Mannion can bring a spark - and perhaps more importantly, a stronger connection with their quarterback room.

This is a pivotal offseason for Philadelphia. After a season that fell short of expectations, the pressure is on to retool the offense and get back to the top of the NFC. Mannion’s hire is a gamble on upside - a bet that his experience as a former QB, his recent work with young signal-callers, and his exposure to elite offensive systems will translate into success in a high-pressure role.

There will be growing pains, no doubt. But if Mannion can bring clarity, creativity, and confidence to the Eagles’ offense, this could be the kind of forward-thinking hire that pays off in a big way.
