Eagles Hire Former NFL QB for Key Offensive Role

The Eagles are betting on the rapid rise of Sean Mannion, a young coach with deep NFL ties and a fast-tracked climb from quarterback to offensive coordinator.

The Philadelphia Eagles have made their move at offensive coordinator, and it’s a bold one: Sean Mannion, just 33 years old and only two years into his coaching career, is taking the reins of the offense.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. Mannion spent nearly a decade in the NFL as a quarterback, suiting up from 2015 to 2023 with stops in Los Angeles (Rams), Minnesota, and Seattle.

He wasn’t a longtime starter, but he did spend years absorbing systems from some of the most respected offensive minds in the game - Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Zac Taylor, Kevin Stefanski, Gary Kubiak, and more. That’s a who's who of today’s NFL offensive architecture, and Mannion had a front-row seat.

After hanging up the cleats, Mannion wasted no time getting into coaching. He joined LaFleur’s staff in Green Bay in 2024 as an offensive assistant, then took over as quarterbacks coach in 2025.

That season, he played a key role in Jordan Love’s breakout year - Love posted his best numbers as a pro, showing growth in decision-making, pocket presence, and overall command of the offense. While Mannion wasn’t calling plays, his impact on the quarterback room was clear.

Now, he’s stepping into the spotlight in Philadelphia - and possibly into the play-caller’s headset, though the team hasn’t confirmed that detail yet. If he does take on that responsibility, it’ll be his first time doing so at any level.

But the Eagles clearly see something special. Head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t hold back in his praise, calling Mannion “a bright young coach with a tremendous future” and highlighting his strategic approach and the breadth of experience he’s accumulated during his 11 years in the league.

It’s hard not to draw parallels to Kellen Moore, another former QB who made a rapid rise through the coaching ranks. Moore became the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in just his second year on staff. Mannion’s trajectory is similar - and the Eagles are hoping for similar results.

What makes this move intriguing is how much Mannion has already seen, despite his youth. He’s worked under coaches from the Mike Shanahan tree, known for its quarterback-friendly systems and innovative run-pass balance. That background could mesh well with the Eagles’ offensive personnel, especially if Mannion brings fresh wrinkles to a unit that’s been searching for consistency.

This hire is a swing - but it’s a calculated one. Mannion may not have the traditional resume, but he’s been in the room with some of the sharpest minds in football. Now it’s his turn to put that knowledge to work, and all eyes will be on how he molds this Eagles offense moving forward.
