Eagles GM Finally Reveals Why Star Walked

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman sheds light on the tough financial decisions behind letting Jaelan Phillips join the Panthers despite his promising stint in Philadelphia.

PHOENIX - The NFL offseason always brings its share of surprises, and this year, Jaelan Phillips’ departure from the Philadelphia Eagles is one of the biggest. Phillips, now the highest-paid free agent, signed a lucrative four-year, $120 million contract with the Carolina Panthers. While some might expect Eagles GM Howie Roseman to be rattled, he seems perfectly at ease with the decision.

Speaking at the NFL owners meetings, Roseman candidly addressed the situation. “In free agency, sometimes you have to let players walk because there are always higher bidders,” he explained. It's clear the Eagles had their limits, and the Panthers were willing to surpass them.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio mentioned that the Eagles made a concerted effort to retain Phillips. There was even a buzz of optimism just before free agency kicked off, hinting that a deal might be on the horizon. However, when push came to shove, the Eagles chose not to match Carolina's offer.

Phillips’ deal, averaging $30 million annually, sets the bar high this offseason. With $80 million guaranteed, he's right up there with the league's top earners, trailing only Colts receiver Alec Pierce and Raiders center Tyler Linderbaum in guaranteed money.

Acquired from the Dolphins in a trade for a 2026 third-round pick, Phillips quickly made his mark in Philadelphia. His impact was undeniable, with 41 QB pressures, four passes defended, and two sacks in just eight games, bolstering an already formidable defense.

Given his performance, age, and familiarity with Fangio from their time in Miami, Phillips seemed like a long-term fit for the Eagles. But ultimately, the financial commitment required was beyond what the team was willing to make.

As the Eagles anticipate a compensatory third-round pick in 2027, they’ll look to regroup and continue building their roster. Meanwhile, Phillips embarks on a new chapter with the Panthers, ready to prove he’s worth every penny.
