PHILADELPHIA - The Eagles haven’t gotten a full look at Makai Lemon yet, and that’s the only real problem right now.
Philadelphia’s first-round rookie receiver, the No. 20 overall pick, sat out his sixth straight practice on Tuesday because of a nagging hamstring injury. That’s hardly the kind of start anyone wanted from a player expected to matter right away. Still, there’s no reason for alarm based on what’s been happening around him.
Lemon has been doing more than just waiting on the sideline. Before Tuesday’s practice, he was out there with his helmet on, catching passes off the JUGS machine. It wasn’t a full return, but it was movement in the right direction.
And just as important, the rookie is apparently making an impression where a lot of early growth happens for young players: in meetings, in film work and in the daily grind that doesn’t show up on the practice field.
After practice, Jalen Hurts was asked about what he’s seen from Lemon away from the field, and the quarterback had plenty to say.
“I think he’s been very intentional with that. I think he’s all ears,” Hurts said.
“I think he’s a very intentional, quiet, mild-mannered hard worker. He’s hungry.
He has a great heart.
“I think especially for a rookie receiver like him coming in, I think it’s valuable to tell them the things that they may not know. The things that they may not know about the game, about how to prepare, to take care of yourself and do those things.
I had to do those things when I came in as a young player. So to be able to pass that along to Makai has been, I think, very good, and I think it’ll be good for our team in hindsight.
“But the way that he’s been engaging himself, he’s doing the things that (DeVonta Smith is) doing. He’s been right there in the huddle.
He might not be getting those reps. But am I in the huddle?
Am I feeling it? And I getting that same energy and that same vibe as if I’m playing and I have my pads on?
It’s all in the preparation.
“Coach (Lincoln) Riley has always said a great number of things about Makai and how he prepares and how intense he is in the walkthroughs. I’ve seen the same thing here.
“I’ve excited with him and the time we’ve had him here. He’s got great hands.
Physical runner. Hopefully we can get that ball rolling soon, get everybody healthy and see all who we have.
But regardless, I’m excited with where we are.”
The Eagles are hoping Lemon can get back on the field soon, especially after he also missed time in spring practices with the same hamstring issue. The former USC standout won the Biletnikoff Award as college football’s top receiver, and he was expected to play a major role in helping fill the void left by A.J. Brown.
That role, of course, starts with time on the field and time with Hurts. Until Lemon is healthy enough to stack those reps, the Eagles will keep waiting to see what their first-round pick can really become.

Quinyon Mitchell Injury Suddenly Puts Eagles Cornerback Depth In Focus
A practice injury to Quinyon Mitchell briefly shifted the Eagles cornerback picture on Tuesday, as the rookie left drills and did not return. The issue did not appear serious, but it was enough to put a spotlight on a group that has already been under some scrutiny as Philadelphia sorts out its secondary.
Mac McWilliams stepped in with the first-team defense while Mitchell was being tended to, a reminder of how quickly the Eagles can be forced to lean on their depth at corner. Jakorian Bennett, Jonathan Jones, Kelee Ringo and Tariq Castro-Fields are among the other options available, but the margin for error at the position looks thin when one of the top pieces is suddenly out of the mix. Eagles Camp Is Creating A Real WR3 Debate Behind The Stars
Training camp has a way of sorting out the depth chart, and this one has given the Eagles a much clearer look at the receivers behind the top names. With DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon dealing with injuries, extra snaps have gone to the rest of the room, and Darius Cooper has taken full advantage. He has been showing up all over the field with a steady stream of catches, looking sharper than he did a year ago and making himself part of the conversation in a group that was supposed to have some established pecking order.
The part that matters now is how Cooper is fitting with Jalen Hurts, because that is usually what turns camp momentum into actual roster trust. Marquise Brown is still in the mix, but his connection with Hurts is still coming along, which has left the Eagles with a real decision to sort through as practices continue. For a team built around its stars, the third receiver spot is suddenly one of the more interesting battles on the field. [Read more 🡒]
Eagles Already Face One Big Concern With Their New Pass Rusher
Jonathan Greenards first summer in Philadelphia has already hit a snag, and it comes at a time when the Eagles were hoping to get their new pass rusher up to speed quickly. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Greenard is still dealing with a lingering pectoral injury, leaving him on the Physically Unable to Perform list and out of physical work while the rest of camp ramps up around him.
Greenard has stayed involved in meetings and has been around the team for practice, but Fangio made clear the missed reps are a concern when it comes to getting him ready for the regular season. For a player expected to matter in the rotation off the edge, every day away from live work matters, and the Eagles now have to manage that timeline while waiting to see when he can finally return to the field.
