Andy Dalton’s bid to win the Eagles’ backup quarterback job is off to a rough start, and the latest preseason game only made the picture murkier.
Against the New England Patriots in Week 2 of the preseason, Dalton started again and came up short. He finished 3-of-10 for 44 yards, with every one of those completions going to wide receiver Darius Cooper, in Philadelphia’s 24-21 loss.
Meanwhile, Tanner McKee made a much stronger case for the No. 2 job. He went 16-of-22 for 173 yards and two touchdowns against New England, and that performance only widened the gap in the eyes of plenty of observers.
After Dalton also struggled in the Eagles’ 24-7 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, many were left wondering why he got the nod again over McKee. Head coach Nick Sirianni said the decision was part of the competition.
"It's still a competition," Sirianni said via The Athletic's Brooks Kubena. "Andy's going in first because he's not going to play quite as much as Tanner because he has had more experience and he has more experience within this type of system. And Tanner needs to continue to play there - because I think you saw the improvements there from Tanner.
So, we've got to continue to give both of them opportunities within practice - and potentially games. We'll see how that goes.
Obviously, I'm not there yet. That was the plan today."
Through two preseason games, Dalton has completed just six passes on 16 attempts. The production hasn’t been there, and the preseason reps have only made it harder for him to build momentum.
That’s what makes the battle so interesting. The Eagles appear to like Dalton, and Sirianni’s explanation suggests he remains very much in the mix. But McKee’s showing against the Patriots made a loud case that he should be the clear backup.
Dalton’s résumé still carries weight, of course. He has had a long NFL career and made multiple Pro Bowls with the Cincinnati Bengals. But for fans trying to make sense of the competition, the tape from these first two preseason games has been hard to ignore.
For now, the Eagles still seem open to Dalton. Whether that holds after what McKee put on display is the real question.
