The Eagles are 2-0, but their first real measuring stick of the season might be waiting in Chicago.
Philadelphia has survived narrow wins over the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans, and now heads into Week 3 as a 3.5-point road favorite against the Bears, according to FanDuel. That line tells you plenty about the uncertainty surrounding Chicago after a wild two-week start.
Ben Johnson’s team came out swinging in Week 1, putting up 59 points on the Carolina Panthers. Then Week 2 brought the other end of the spectrum: a three-point output in a home loss to the Minnesota Vikings, with Caleb Williams leaving that game with a hamstring injury.
If Williams is available for Monday Night Football, the matchup looks very different. If he’s not, Chicago would turn to Tyson Bagent.
Bagent’s NFL résumé is still pretty small, but it’s not empty. As an undrafted rookie in 2023, he made four starts and went 2-2, throwing three touchdowns against six interceptions while posting a 73.0 passer rating.
He also added 23 rushing attempts for 109 yards and two scores. The Bears have reason to trust him based on what he’s done in preseason, where he’s totaled 10 touchdowns and two interceptions across the last three summers.
That said, preseason production only goes so far once the games count for real.
Philadelphia has not been a sure thing against the number either. The Eagles are 0-2 against the spread after failing to cover as 5.5-point favorites at home against Washington and as seven-point favorites on the road against Tennessee.
There’s confidence in Jalen Hurts, but questions remain about the Eagles up front, especially in the trenches. Their defense could get a lift if Jonathan Greenard is able to return for this game. For now, the lean is toward taking the points, though that could change before Monday night.
And there’s one more wrinkle: the Eagles may have some extra motivation after being embarrassed by this Bears team on Black Friday last year.
