Eagles Face A Riq Woolen Decision Before Their Leverage Slips

With the Eagles facing a tough season, trading Riq Woolen might be their best bet before other teams swoop in.

The Eagles are staring at a season that has gone off the rails, and that reality should push them toward a hard deadline decision on Riq Woolen.

At 2-6, Philadelphia has dropped six straight and is looking more like a seller than a team with any real playoff path left. That makes Woolen, who signed a one-year, $12 million deal in March, an obvious name to move before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. The bigger issue is timing: if the Eagles wait too long, the Washington Commanders could end up beating them to the punch on a separate move involving the Detroit Lions.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently floated Woolen as a possible trade fit for Detroit while also naming Commanders cornerback Mike Sainristil as another potential target in the same discussion. The Lions make sense as a buyer.

They rank 32nd in the NFL in pass defense at 276.6 yards allowed per game and are tied for 32nd in passing touchdowns allowed with 18. Detroit needs help in the secondary, and Philadelphia should be on the phone.

Woolen’s season has not given the Eagles much reason to keep waiting. He has started all eight games in 2026 and has 30 total tackles, six pass deflections and one forced fumble.

But the coverage numbers tell the fuller story. He has allowed 24 catches on 43 targets for 365 yards and three touchdowns, with a passer rating allowed of 107.2 and a 55.8 percent catch rate.

He has also been a frequent target for officials. Woolen is tied for first among cornerbacks in penalties with seven, alongside the Cardinals’ Denzel Burke and the Texans’ Kamari Lassiter. That combination of coverage problems and flags has made the fit look shaky.

Given the way this season has unfolded, the Eagles should treat Woolen as a short-term asset and cash out now. He is on a one-year deal, and the odds of a new contract this offseason look low. Better to get a pick back than let him leave for nothing.

The Commanders add another layer to the situation. They, too, appear headed toward seller territory, and Dan Quinn is on the hot seat. If Washington gets involved in the same market while Philadelphia hesitates, the Eagles could watch Detroit land help elsewhere.

That’s why the move now matters. The Lions are already being connected to Woolen, and with the deadline closing in, Philadelphia needs to accept that the signing did not work out and take whatever return it can get before the window closes.

Eagles Deadline Could Force Painful Decisions On Familiar Faces

The Eagles are heading toward the NFL trade deadline in a far different place than anyone in Philadelphia expected, sitting at 2-6 and mired in a six-game losing streak. With the roster suddenly looking more vulnerable than it has in years, the front office is being forced to weigh not just what can help right now, but what might need to be moved to address glaring holes elsewhere on the roster.

The biggest pressure points remain easy to spot, especially on the offensive line and at safety, and that has made the conversation around possible trades more uncomfortable than usual. Dallas Goedert and Hollywood Brown are among the names being floated as possible candidates, while the status of other familiar pieces has only added to the sense that this deadline could bring a difficult shakeup for a team trying to stop its slide. Eagles May Be Learning Something Important About Tanner McKee

Since Jalen Hurts 2026 season ended before Week 6, Tanner McKee has been thrust into the kind of role the Eagles never expected to need this soon, and the early returns have given the coaching staff something to evaluate beyond just wins and losses. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has liked what he has seen from McKee over his last three starts, especially the way the quarterback has handled the offense as the games have piled up.

The more interesting part for Philadelphia is how steady McKee has looked while settling into the job. His passing production has been consistent from one start to the next, with similar output in the air and a comparable touchdown-to-interception profile, which suggests the Eagles may be getting a better sense of what he can be if they need him to keep steering the offense. Nick Sirianni Just Reframed A Costly Eagles Protection Breakdown

A protection bust in the recent game looked ugly in real time, with a Washington defender slipping past Landon Dickerson for a sack on Tanner McKee, but Nick Sirianni spent part of his latest comments trying to put the play in a broader context. The Eagles coach said the issue was tied to the kind of coordination work that happens before the snap, where one missed detail can unravel an entire rep, especially when the offense is adjusting at the line.

For Philadelphia, the important part is less about assigning blame than understanding how quickly a small communication error can turn into a hit on the quarterback. Sirianni emphasized that these breakdowns come from the whole operation not being in sync, which is exactly why the Eagles lean so heavily on communication and teamwork to keep protection clean when the defense starts moving things around.
