Eagles Face A Monday Night Test That Could Decide Everything

While the Eagles aim to maintain their perfect start, the Bears grapple with a quarterback shuffle as they prepare to leverage their formidable ground game and stout offensive line in Week 3.

The Eagles head to Chicago on Monday night with a few matchups that could decide whether Week 3 stays comfortable or turns messy in a hurry.

Start with the quarterback situation on the Bears’ side. Caleb Williams has a hamstring injury that will likely keep him out, and Tyson Bagent is in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Both were listed as non participants to start the week, which puts 38-year-old Case Keenum in line to take over if Chicago needs him. Keenum hasn’t appeared in a regular season game since 2023.

Vic Fangio said the Eagles aren’t trying to overthink it.

“Don't have enough information yet,” Fangio said. “We're preparing for Chicago's offense. I don't think their offense will change a whole lot schematically, so that's what we'll prepare for.”

Keenum has seen the Eagles before. The last time he faced them was Week 1 of the 2019 season, when he started for the Commanders.

Philadelphia won that game 32-27, but Keenum was sharp, completing 30 of 44 passes for 380 yards and 3 touchdowns. He has also had success against Fangio in his career, though those games came in 2021 and 2017.

The bigger concern for the Eagles may be what happens when Chicago hands the ball off. The last meeting between these teams, in Week 13 last year, was one of the roughest defensive outings the Eagles have had since Fangio took over as defensive coordinator.

Chicago rolled up 281 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 47 carries in a 24-15 win. It was the most rushing yards the Eagles had allowed in a decade.

Kyle Monangai and D’Andre Swift both cleared 100 yards with a touchdown, with Monangai going for 130 on 22 carries and Swift finishing with 125 on 18.

“We've got to play it better, obviously,” Fangio said. “They are one of the better running teams in the league.

They've got a really great O-line, great backs. Their scheme is good.

We're going to have to play it a whole lot better.”

The Eagles missed 13 tackles in that game a year ago, and that’s the kind of slippage they can’t afford again. Missed tackles were also a problem in Week 2 against the Titans, which makes this a spot to watch closely. Chicago comes into Week 3 with the NFL’s best rushing offense, piling up a league-high 70 carries for 425 yards and 6 touchdowns through two games.

That puts extra pressure on an Eagles defensive front that has been productive without quite looking dominant. Philadelphia has the fourth-highest pressure rate in the NFL, but it has only three sacks and owns the longest time-to-pressure average in the league. Now the unit gets a better offensive line than the one it faced in the first two weeks.

Chicago’s front is a real test. Darnell Wright, a former first-round pick, has become a force in the run game.

Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson give the Bears two quality guards. Braxton Jones has been the starter at left tackle, with Theo Benedet also getting reps, while the Bears are hoping Ozzy Trapilo can return soon from the knee injury he suffered in the playoffs last year.

At center is Garrett Bradbury, the former Viking, and the source material notes he has not been very good.

On the other side of the ball, Saquon Barkley’s status is worth monitoring after he suffered a stinger on his first carry against the Titans. He tried to push through it last week but was eventually shut down.

Still, he was back at practice to start this week, which is a good sign for his availability. That matters because Chicago’s run defense has been vulnerable.

Aaron Jones ran for 105 yards on 23 carries against the Bears last week, and Chicago enters Week 3 ranked 23rd against the run. The Bears have also allowed 1.84 yards before contact per attempt, which ranks as the 7th-worst mark in the NFL.

There may be room there for the Eagles’ backs.

Philadelphia’s receivers could also have a favorable setup. DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks have given the Eagles a strong one-two punch early this season, with Smith looking like a clear WR1 and Wicks settling in as a valuable WR2.

They may get to work against a secondary that has had some rough numbers through two weeks. Jaylon Johnson has been one of the league’s best cornerbacks, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2023 and 2024, but he was limited to just 7 games in 2025 and has opened this season slowly.

Per NextGen Stats, Johnson has been targeted 11 times, allowing 8 catches for 168 yards and an opposing passer rating of 137.5. Tyrique Stevenson has also been targeted 9 times, giving up 5 catches for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns, with an opposing passer rating of 114.8.

Stevenson is dealing with a hamstring injury and was a DNP to start the week, so Malik Muhammad could step in if he can’t play.

There’s also a Philadelphia offensive line issue to watch, though the hope is that things are starting to settle. The Eagles have not said publicly whether Drew Kendall at center and Cam Jurgens at guard is the permanent setup, but that looks like the logical direction. The idea is simple: let those two keep learning their new spots and try to build some stability.

And then there’s Montez Sweat. The Bears have only 5 sacks and 19 total pressures through two games, with a pressure rate that ranks 29th in the NFL, but Sweat remains the edge threat to circle.

The former Commanders first-round pick had 10 sacks in 2025 and lines up on both sides of the line, though he spends more time rushing against right tackles. That makes his matchup with Lane Johnson one of the best individual battles on the board Monday night.

DeVonta Smith Just Gave The Eagles A New Offensive Worry

DeVonta Smiths status is suddenly something the Eagles have to monitor closely, with the wideout missing Thursdays practice because of a hamstring injury. Its a familiar concern for Philadelphia after Smith dealt with a hamstring issue earlier in training camp, and the timing matters with another game coming up against the Bears.

Smith was a key part of the offense in the win over Tennessee, so any setback there carries real weight for the Eagles passing game. If he cannot go, the offense may need to lean more heavily on Dontayvion Wicks, who would be in line for a bigger workload depending on how the week unfolds. [Read more 🡒]

Eagles Injury Report Looks Bad But One Detail Changes The Panic

The Eagles Week 3 injury report looks crowded enough to make anyone pause, with several offensive names either missing or limited in practice. Running backs Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley and Saquon Barkley all showed up on it, along with wide receiver DeVonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert, while the defensive side included Jalen Carter, Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Mukuba in some form of participation.

Still, the timing softens the alarm a bit, because Philadelphia has an extra day to get ready before its Monday night matchup with the Chicago Bears. That matters when the list includes players who are still working through the week rather than being fully shut down, and it gives the Eagles a little more runway to sort out who is truly in danger of missing game day and who is simply dealing with the usual late-September wear and tear. Zach Ertzs Return Hints At Eagles Plan For A Key Young Tight End

Zach Ertz finally spoke publicly after re-signing with the Eagles, and his return offered a clear glimpse at part of the plan in Philadelphia. The veteran tight end is set up to help guide rookie Eli Stowers, a second-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft who is currently on injured reserve and still waiting for his first NFL snap after injuries and the usual adjustment curve of pro football.

For a team that has long valued tight end play, bringing Ertz back is about more than nostalgia. His willingness to help Stowers develop suggests the Eagles see a real long-term role for the young player, and they are giving him a chance to learn before he ever gets on the field. For now, the intrigue is in how much growth Philadelphia can unlock once Stowers is healthy enough to join the mix. [Read more 🡒]
