As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, all eyes are on the top prospects, but the Philadelphia Eagles are quietly focusing on a lesser-known talent who could soon don their colors. Enter Trey Smack, a former Florida Gators kicker making waves at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
NFL insider Mike Garafolo captured Smack showcasing his impressive leg, nailing field goals from 60 yards out. What caught attention was the presence of three special teams coaches, including Eagles assistant special teams coach Tyler Brown, closely observing Smack's performance.
Could this signal a shift in the Eagles’ kicking game, potentially challenging Jake Elliott's position? Elliott, once a reliable leg for Philly, has faced scrutiny over the past two seasons, with his field goal percentage dipping below 80%.
Last year, he hit just 74.1% of his attempts, marking a career low when attempting 20 or more kicks in a season. Yet, he retains the backing of GM Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni.
In contrast, Smack is coming off a solid season with the Gators, boasting an 81.8% success rate and earning a spot on the third-team All-SEC in 2025. His standout year in 2024 saw him make 85.7% of his kicks and earn All-SEC Coaches Team honors.
The Eagles could benefit from introducing competition for Elliott, especially given Smack's consistency on long-range attempts. Last season, Smack converted five of six field goals from 50 yards or more, while Elliott managed only four of eight from the same distance.
For Eagles fans, the hope is that Coach Brown has conveyed Smack's potential impact to Roseman. With Smack in the mix, Philadelphia might find the consistency they've been missing in their kicking game.
