Eagles Eye CB in Draft as Cooper DeJean May Switch Positions

Eagles consider strategic shake-up as they eye versatile cornerback options for a crucial draft decision.

The Philadelphia Eagles are exploring a bold move that could shake up their defensive backfield-shifting All-Pro nickel cornerback Cooper DeJean to an outside corner position. This strategic consideration, as outlined by General Manager Howie Roseman, underscores DeJean's versatility and potential impact across the secondary.

DeJean's prowess as a nickel corner is well-documented. Last season, he occasionally stepped outside when the Eagles were in their base defense, about 15% of the time. However, a permanent switch to the outside corner role has been a topic of discussion, even as he excelled in his current position.

The Eagles' defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, has previously been hesitant to move DeJean without a solid replacement. Despite acquiring Michael Carter from the Jets last October, Fangio maintained DeJean's position due to the lack of a suitable substitute.

Enter Clemson's Avieon Terrell, a potential draft target for the Eagles. Known for his skills on the outside, Terrell projects as a nickel in the NFL, partly due to his size at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds.

Terrell had a formal interview with the Eagles at the NFL combine, hinting at the team's interest. Whether the Eagles use their first-round pick at No. 23 or trade up from their No. 54 spot in the second round, Terrell remains a strong candidate.

Roseman's comments at the combine highlight the flexibility DeJean offers. "Really, Coop can play anything," Roseman noted, emphasizing DeJean's ability to excel at multiple positions. This adaptability could be crucial, especially with potential roster changes looming.

The Eagles face several draft needs, including the offensive line, wide receiver, tight end, and edge rusher positions. If they trade A.J. Brown, they could gain an extra first-or second-round pick, offering more leeway to pursue someone like Terrell.

Avieon Terrell, younger brother of Atlanta's A.J. Terrell, has expressed admiration for DeJean and fellow cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. Terrell's connection with Eagles safety Drew Mukuba, a former Clemson teammate, adds another layer to his potential fit with the team.

The Eagles might also consider a veteran free agent for the cornerback position opposite Mitchell. Last season, Adoree Jackson was brought in on a one-year deal, but his performance was inconsistent. Kelee Ringo, a 2023 fourth-round pick, briefly took over the starting role before Jackson regained it.

Ultimately, Fangio will deploy the Eagles' top three cornerbacks, whether that includes Mitchell and DeJean on the outside with Terrell at nickel, or a combination involving a low-cost veteran. Roseman has made it clear that all options are on the table.

"Elite player at the nickel position," Roseman said of DeJean, highlighting his impact across various aspects of the game. DeJean's size, speed, and athletic ability make him a formidable presence, whether at nickel or outside corner.

While DeJean's versatility is a boon, Eagles fans can rest assured that Jalen Hurts' quarterback position remains secure, at least for now.
