The Eagles found a way to escape Nashville with a 24-20 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and the finish had just about everything: Jalen Hurts shaking off two interceptions, DeVonta Smith piling up clutch catches, and Darius Cooper coming through with his first career touchdown.
Philadelphia was staring at a 20-17 deficit after the Titans hit a 33-yard field goal with 1:56 left. That didn’t end the story.
Hurts responded by going 6-for-8 for 61 yards on the final possession, finishing the drive with a 3-yard touchdown to deliver a win that looked unlikely with less than two minutes remaining. He closed the day 26-for-37 for 264 yards with an 85.9 rating.
Smith was the engine on that last march. He caught four passes for 38 yards on the game-winning drive, and he finished with 10 receptions for 117 yards. His biggest grab came on a 19-yard catch that moved the Eagles to the 3-yard line with 14 seconds left.
Then came Cooper, who slipped into a wide-open pocket in the back of the end zone for his first NFL touchdown. It was the kind of moment that can define a career, and in this game it delivered the winning points.
The Eagles also leaned on linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who led the team with 10 tackles.
Not much about this one came easy for Philadelphia, even with the team entering as a heavy favorite. The offense needed late-game execution to survive, and the defense spent too much of the afternoon trying to catch up.
One of the biggest problems came against the run defense, which gave up a 27-yard gain on third-and-22 for a first down. Marcus Epps missed the tackle on the play, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has work to do.
There was also a decision from Nick Sirianni that stood out. He accepted an illegal formation penalty that put Tennessee in a third-and-23 situation instead of second-and-28, which gave the Titans two shots to move the chains instead of one. The extra play ended up becoming a 27-yard run.
The offense took another hit when Dallas Goedert left in the first quarter with a knee injury. Goedert had a huge Week 1, but Philadelphia felt the dropoff after losing him, with Johnny Mundt and E.J.
Jenkins taking over at tight end. The team also has Eli Stowers on IR.
There were other rough edges too. The Eagles lost yards on a throwback to Makai Lemon in a key stretch of the fourth quarter, and the screen game again failed to produce much.
Still, Lemon gave Philadelphia a couple of important moments. He made a 14-yard catch on third-and-eight to keep the opening touchdown drive alive, and later sprinted downfield to tackle Amani Hooker and stop a potential pick-6. Hooker’s 92-yard return eventually led to a Titans score on fourth-and-goal, but Lemon at least forced them to earn it.
Philadelphia’s first two games have also gone by without a turnover, a sharp contrast to last season, when the team forced 21 takeaways, including seven interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries.
Up front, the reshuffled line was another point of uncertainty. Cam Jurgens was making his first start at left guard, while Drew Kendall was at center, and the eye test suggested Jurgens had a difficult afternoon. The Eagles may need to revisit that setup before Week 3.
