Eagles Enter London Trip With One Problem That Could Change Everything

With an extensive list of injuries threatening their roster, the Eagles face major challenges in maintaining their competitive edge as they prepare for their Week 5 game against the Jaguars in London.

By the time the Eagles walked off the field after Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Rams, the injury list had become almost as long as the game’s turning points.

That’s not why they lost, though. Philadelphia still had a two-score lead in the fourth quarter and couldn’t close it out. The damage was done, and the pain is real.

Now the focus shifts to Week 5, and the Eagles are heading to London to face the Jaguars with the roster still banged up in every direction. Their first official injury report won’t come until Wednesday afternoon, but the early picture is already pretty grim.

DeVonta Smith’s hamstring is one of the biggest concerns. The Eagles’ top receiver played through the injury in Chicago, then missed every practice last week and was ruled out against the Rams. The early read is that this could cost him more than one game, and it sounds more likely than not that he won’t be ready for London.

Dallas Goedert is still waiting on the other side of that MCL sprain he suffered in Week 2 against the Titans. The Eagles chose not to place him on IR, which suggested they hoped he’d be back within a four-game window.

Instead, he’s already missed two games and could sit out a third in Week 5. Philadelphia is feeling that absence.

Then there was the late Lane Johnson surprise. The Eagles announced Sunday morning that he was out for personal reasons, even though he had spent the week working with the first team at right tackle.

That forced Markel Bell into the lineup at the last second. Since the game ended, the team has been very guarded about Johnson’s status.

Saquon Barkley lasted only four snaps before a hamstring injury knocked him out. NFL Network reported Monday night that he avoided a major injury, but he is now week-to-week.

The backfield thinned even more when Tank Bigsby went down late in the game with an abdomen injury. He’s headed to IR, with NFL Network reporting Monday afternoon that he will undergo core muscle surgery and could be back in about six weeks.

That leaves Will Shipley as the only healthy running back on the 53-man roster.

The Eagles also lost Cam Jurgens to the concussion protocol after he self-reported symptoms Monday. He played all 61 snaps against the Rams at left guard and struggled badly, so it’s fair to wonder how much the concussion was already affecting him.

Zack Baun missed Sunday with a concussion, but the hope is that he can clear protocol in time for the Jaguars game. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. stepped in and made the most of it, finishing with a team-high 15 tackles.

Quinyon Mitchell went out early in the third quarter after injuring his knee while making a tackle on the sideline. He never went back to the locker room, tried to loosen up on the stationary bike and still couldn’t return. NFL Network reported Monday that the early hope is Mitchell only suffered a bone bruise after hyperextending his knee.

Jonathan Greenard also left in the third quarter with an ankle injury and didn’t return. He had been building back nicely in his second game after a pectoral injury, and the Eagles leaned on Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith and Arnold Ebiketie after he exited. NFL Network said Monday that Greenard’s injury is not major and that he is day-to-day.

Marcus Epps was another absence on Sunday. He showed up on the injury report Thursday with a groin issue, missed Friday’s practice and was ruled out. He had started at safety for the first three weeks before the Eagles began rotating him with Michael Carter II in Week 3, and Carter got the start against the Rams.

The receiver group was stretched thin because Hollywood Brown was also out with an ankle injury. He has now missed back-to-back games after hurting the ankle ahead of Week 3 in Chicago.

Fred Johnson missed a second straight week as well after popping up on the report before the Chicago game with a knee injury. With Lane Johnson out, the Eagles started Markel Bell, and they did not have another backup offensive tackle available against the Rams.

On injured reserve, Landon Dickerson remains sidelined with a bone bruise in his right knee after a rough Week 1 outing that he called a “liability.” He has to miss at least four games, which makes him eligible to return in Week 6 against Carolina, though it’s unclear whether that will happen. Dickerson was seen walking through the tunnel with his family after Sunday’s loss.

The Eagles also have Eli Stowers on IR after placing the second-round tight end there the day before the season opener with hamstring and quadriceps injuries. He has now missed four games and is technically eligible to return, but his training camp work suggests he is still a long way from helping this season.

Grant Calcaterra is also eligible to come off IR after missing the final six days of training camp with a back injury. Jakorian Bennett, who also missed the final six training camp practices, is eligible as well, though he did not appear likely to make the roster.

Johnny Wilson is not eligible to return after the Eagles waived him on Aug. 21 with an injury designation and he reverted to IR. Andre’ Sam is also ineligible after injuring his foot in the preseason and reverting to IR after being waived/injured at final cuts.

Eagles Backfield Trouble Just Forced A Telling Move Before London

With Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby both dealing with injuries, the Eagles had little choice but to add another body to the backfield before heading to London. The team is elevating Dameon Pierce to the 53-man roster, a practical move that speaks to how thin the running back room has become as Philadelphia tries to stay on schedule heading into an overseas game.

Pierce brings a familiar profile as a former Texans runner who has flashed enough to be viewed as a useful depth option. For the Eagles, the question now is less about upside than availability, because the next stretch will test how much of the offense can be carried without two of its expected contributors in the backfield. Eagles Rainy Loss Sparked A Viral Moment Fans Didn't See

Rainy Sundays in Philadelphia can make even a routine sideline assignment feel like a test of endurance, and Erin Andrews gave fans a glimpse of just how messy it got during the Eagles-Rams game. The longtime broadcaster posted behind-the-scenes photos and video on Instagram showing her preparing to work through the wet conditions, offering a look at the kind of cleanup and constant adjustment that comes with covering an NFL game in a downpour.

The weather added another layer to a game that already turned sharply against Philadelphia, as the Rams rallied for a 24-20 win. Kyren Williams helped fuel the comeback, while Andrews post ended up becoming one of those viral reminders that the broadcast booth and sideline have their own battle when the rain starts falling. Eagles May Need O-Line Help More Than The Trade Market Can Offer

The offensive line market has become one of the leagues quiet pressure points, and Philadelphia is right in the middle of it. With injuries and retirements thinning out depth across the NFL, the Eagles join teams like the Packers, Patriots and Ravens as clubs that could be looking for help, even if the trade buzz around that need has not really started to build yet.

ESPNs Dan Graziano pointed to that group as possible participants if the market ever opens up, but the problem is obvious: good linemen are hard to find and even harder to pry loose. For the Eagles, the bigger issue may be whether the help they need is even available in a market where demand is already outpacing supply. [Read more 🡒]
