Mac McWilliams, a fifth-round pick last year, is beginning to show signs that Year 2 could look very different from Year 1. His rookie season was almost invisible: five games, one tackle, one pass deflection, and just two targets against him without a completion allowed.
That’s the kind of stat line that usually keeps a player on the fringe. Now, though, he’s working to change that story.
Through three days of camp, McWilliams has moved ahead of Kelee Ringo and is operating as a backup corner. On Day 3, he drew attention from reporters after a strong practice showing.
"Second-year cornerback Mac McWilliams had a couple of pass breakups in the final competitive period of practice," NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro wrote. "The final play was a PBU against rookie TE Eli Stowers. McWilliams was a fifth-round pick last year and is fighting for a roster spot this summer."
That matters because the cornerback room is crowded and the spots behind Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Riq Woolen are very much up for grabs. Mitchell, DeJean, and Woolen are locked into starting roles, but the battle for the bench includes Ringo, McWilliams, Jakorian Bennett, and Jonathan Jones. Not everyone in that group is going to stick.
McWilliams at least looks like a safe bet for the practice squad, which is where he spent all of last season. The bigger goal now is earning a real place on the active roster.
That won’t be easy. Ringo hasn’t been strong in coverage, but he brings value as the team’s special teams ace, which keeps him in the mix. For McWilliams to pull away, he likely needs to make his mark on kickoff and punt coverage too.
For now, he’s one of the more interesting names to watch as camp unfolds. If this momentum holds, the Eagles may end up with a preseason breakout from a corner who was supposed to be an afterthought.
And if he keeps it going, he could become the kind of backup who’s ready to step in if someone like Woolen goes down. Whether that happens is the big question hanging over McWilliams right now.
