Eagles Camp Suddenly Has Two Roster Storylines Fans Need To Watch

Despite a light practice post-defeat, the Eagles' camp Day 12 sees key players making cautious returns amid notable on-field developments.

PHILADELPHIA - With joint practices against the New England Patriots coming later this week, the Eagles used Day 12 of camp for a lighter, hour-long session that still managed to tell a pretty clear story: the injury report and the returning bodies mattered more than anything else.

The biggest boost came from DeVonta Smith, who was back on the field in a limited role after missing significant time with a hamstring injury. He worked individually, but he did not get into team drills.

On defense, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean also returned after sitting out one practice. Both got some first-team work, though the Eagles kept their workloads lighter and rotated Kelee Ringo and Michael Carter in behind them.

Makai Lemon was out again with a hamstring injury, but he does appear to be moving toward a return. The rookie even joined the catching circuits at the end of the session.

Jalen Hurts handled almost all of the team reps, while Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee got just two reps apiece in limited chances. Neither backup made much of an impression.

The best play of the day came when Hurts went deep to Quez Watkins in traffic, only for Michael Carter to win at the catch point and rip the ball away as both players went to the ground. Carter has been one of the more consistent performers in camp, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio clearly likes his ability to move between nickel, dime and safety. He made that play from the slot.

Mitchell also flashed early with a pass breakup, staying glued to Dontayvion Wicks on an in-breaking route.

A few offensive moments stood out as well. Hollywood Brown, who has had a rough camp, turned a short throw into a decent gain by working in space against Riq Woolen. Woolen also gave up a comeback route to Darius Cooper - a play that has started to feel familiar - and later got beat on a slant by Danny Gray.

Before practice, the Eagles made a roster move by signing cornerback Isaiah Bolden and waiving offensive tackle Hollin Pierce.

The list of players who did not practice was a long one: Lemon, Tank Bigsby (toe), Jonathan Jones (shoulder), Mac McWilliams (groin), Dameon Pierce (hamstring), Jakorian Bennett (knee), Grant Calcaterra (back), John Ojukwu (pectoral), Jose Ramirez (hamstring), Shaun Wade (eye/shoulder), and Johnny Wilson (knee). Bigsby, McWilliams, Calcaterra, Ojukwu, Ramirez and Wade were added to that group after getting banged up against Baltimore.

There was some movement on the limited list, too. Along with Smith, Keyshawn James-Newby (ankle), Cole Wisniewski (hamstring), Tariq Castro-Fields (heel), and Danny Gray (concussion) were limited.

That marked a step forward for James-Newby and Wisniewski, both of whom have missed extended time. Wisniewski last practiced on July 30, and James-Newby hadn’t practiced since Aug.

The second-team offensive line, from left to right, was Fred Johnson, Drew Kendall, Willie Lampkin, Jake Majors and Markel Bell.

In 11 personnel, the starting receivers remained Wicks, Brown and Elijah Moore, with Cooper mixing in. Smith’s return to team work should start to affect that rotation soon.

There wasn’t a ton to take from the offensive and defensive line one-on-ones, but Cam Jurgens did hold up well against Jordan Davis, Jordan Mailata handled Jalyx Hunt, and Tyler Steen continued to show real improvement while giving Jalen Carter as much trouble as could reasonably be expected.

The run game also got a heavy workout. There were at least four attempts, and one of them ended with a missed connection between Hurts and Will Shipley. It wasn’t clear who was at fault, but Shipley reacted quickly and jumped on the fumble to keep it from turning into a turnover.

Dallas Goedert spent much of the day working in traffic underneath, but he also had a drop on a throw behind him and couldn’t finish the self-tip drill.

Za'Darius Smith Just Reopened A Frustration Eagles Fans Know Well

ZaDarius Smith is back in the news, and for Eagles fans it brings a familiar mix of what-ifs and unfinished business. After spending last season in Philadelphia and appearing in five games before retiring, the veteran edge rusher had been tied to a potential return to Cleveland, where he previously worked with Kevin Stefanski, only for his next step to shift in a different direction after a workout.

Now the Falcons are the team making the move, a sign of how quickly the edge-rush market can change when injuries and suspensions start thinning a depth chart. For the Eagles, it is another reminder of how brief Smiths stint in Philly was and how often his career seems to send him back into the spotlight just when one landing spot looks settled. Eagles Rookie Battle Is Suddenly Separating Roster Locks From Bubble Names

The Eagles rookie class has already started to sort itself into two clear groups as camp moves along, with the early draft picks looking far more secure than the rest of the first-year crowd. Philadelphia has spent the summer evaluating 15 rookies across different spots on the roster, and the picture is becoming clearer by the day as some players push toward opening-week roles while others are fighting just to stay in the conversation for the 53-man roster or practice squad.

Jalen Lemons path has been slowed by a hamstring injury that has kept him out since Aug. 4, though he is close to getting back on the field, while the tight end picture also carries some real intrigue with Stowers trending toward a healthy scratch as the TE3 for Week 1. Elsewhere, Bell, Payton, Morris, Wisniewski, Bernard and James-Newby are all being judged not just on talent, but on how quickly they can turn their development into something the Eagles can actually use once roster cuts arrive. Eagles Camp Picture Is Getting Clearer At Wide Receiver

The Eagles twelfth training camp practice offered another look at a receiver room that is slowly starting to take shape, even as the injury report continues to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Makai Lemon, Tank Bigsby and Johnny Wilson were all sidelined, while DeVonta Smith and safety Cole Wisniewski were among the players working on a limited basis as Philadelphia keeps sorting through who can stack full practices ahead of the 2026 season.

Smith was back in a helmet and getting in some position work after the hamstring issue that had slowed him, a small but encouraging step for a passing game that still needs its top targets available and sharp. Lemon, meanwhile, stayed out of the full session but kept moving on the side field, running routes and going through the catch circuit as the Eagles continue to monitor a camp picture at wide receiver that is becoming clearer even if it is not settled yet.
