Day 9 of Eagles training camp brought the kind of padded, high-intensity work that starts to sharpen the picture with the preseason opener set for Saturday. And on a long afternoon in the summer heat, a few names kept showing up while others had a rougher time keeping pace.
The biggest defensive moment belonged to Quinyon Mitchell. In the 2-minute drill team portion of practice, he picked off Jalen Hurts and effectively won the period for the defense.
Hurts tried to squeeze the ball into a tight window, but Mitchell made the play. The offense moved the ball and Hurts had a solid session overall, yet Mitchell’s interception stood out most.
He’s been having a strong summer, and he kept making the case that he’s the best cornerback on the roster.
Darius Cooper continued to build on what has become a steady camp. He was around the football all day, and one of the sharper plays came when he beat Riq Woolen on an out route.
Cooper has also been winning work in the middle of the field and getting to the ball before defenders can. After earning his spot on the 53 last season, he’s making a push for a bigger role this year.
Elijah Moore added another productive practice to his resume. He came away with two notable catches that turned into chunk gains for the offense, and his speed after the catch kept showing up.
That’s the kind of trait the Eagles believed they were getting when they signed Hollywood Brown. With injuries thinning the wide receiver room, Moore is giving the team a real decision to weigh in the coming weeks.
Tariq Castro-Fields also kept flashing. His day included a pass breakup, another example of a summer where he’s consistently found ways to make plays.
Castro-Fields spent last season and the year before on the practice squad, so he knows the system well. His path to the roster is still narrow, but he could be in line for another practice squad role with chances to get elevated during the season.
Michael Carter II is making the safety competition interesting. He’s pushing Marcus Epps for the starting job and added another positive rep with a pass breakup against Eli Stowers, who has shown improvement himself. The Eagles are starting to see that they can live with both Epps and Carter starting next to Andrew Mukuba, which is a good problem to have.
Not everyone left the field feeling good. Andy Dalton had an uneven day, missing targets and never really finding a rhythm. That kind of practice gives Tanner McKee a little more daylight in the QB2 battle, even if the competition has gone back and forth from day to day.
Rocco Underwood also had a session he’d probably like back. There was some monitoring of his work at long snapper, and the results were shaky.
He was sending snaps high and wasn’t consistent getting the ball to Braden Mann. The Eagles still have a few weeks to decide whether they need more competition there, but it’s something worth watching with the season opener on September 14.
Hollywood Brown’s situation is getting harder to ignore, not because of anything he did wrong in one practice, but because others are simply stacking better days. Dontayvion Wicks, Darius Cooper, and Elijah Moore have all been more noticeable in camp, which has Brown sitting on the roster bubble. He still has time to change that this preseason, and he’ll get chances against opponents who aren’t the Eagles secondary.

Quinyon Mitchell Injury Suddenly Puts Eagles Cornerback Depth In Focus
A midweek practice scare briefly shifted attention to one of the Eagles most important young defenders, as Quinyon Mitchell left drills and did not return. The injury did not appear serious, but it was enough to interrupt the look Philadelphia got on the field and put the secondarys depth under the microscope for the rest of the session.
Mac McWilliams stepped in with the first-team defense in Mitchells place, a reminder that the Eagles are leaning on a cornerback group that is still sorting itself out. Behind Mitchell, the options include Jakorian Bennett, Jonathan Jones, Kelee Ringo and Tariq Castro-Fields, a mix that gives Philadelphia bodies but not a lot of certainty if the team has to stretch that depth further. Eagles Camp Is Creating A Real WR3 Debate Behind The Stars
Training camp has a way of turning a depth-chart afterthought into a real talking point, and thats where the Eagles find themselves with their receiver group. With DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon slowed by injuries, Darius Cooper has had more chances to work and has made the most of them, stacking up catches and looking noticeably sharper than he did a year ago. In a room built around stars, those extra reps matter, especially when the staff is trying to sort out who can reliably handle a larger role.
Marquise Brown was brought in to be part of the answer, but the early camp work has made this more interesting than a simple veteran-vs.-young-player competition. Cooper has shown encouraging timing with Jalen Hurts, and the more he keeps doing it in camp, the harder it is to ignore him in the conversation for the Eagles next receiver behind the top options. The question now is whether Brown can close that gap before the preseason picture starts to settle. [Read more 🡒]
Eagles Already Face One Big Concern With Their New Pass Rusher
Jonathan Greenards first summer with Philadelphia has already taken an uneasy turn. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said the new pass rusher is expected to miss all of training camp because of a lingering pectoral injury, and Greenard has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list while staying involved in meetings and other off-field work.
The concern now is not just the injury itself, but the time Greenard is losing at a point when newcomers usually need every rep they can get. Fangio made clear the missed camp work matters for readiness, and the Eagles will have to wait and see how quickly Greenard can get back into physical drills once he is cleared. [Read more 🡒]
