Eagles Backfield Suddenly Has A London Problem Fans Wont Ignore

The Philadelphia Eagles face uncertainty with Tank Bigsby set for surgery and Saquon Barkley's return timeline still hazy, impacting the team's running back options.

The Eagles’ backfield took a hit almost as soon as the dust settled from Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Tank Bigsby is headed to injured reserve after suffering a core muscle injury that will require surgery, according to NFL Media. Ian Rapoport reported the expectation is that Bigsby could return in about six weeks.

Bigsby’s injury came in a game that already left Philadelphia with a longer list of questions. Saquon Barkley was among the players knocked out of the loss, along with outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. Barkley exited with a hamstring issue, and Nick Sirianni didn’t have a firm update after the game.

“We'll see,” he said. “These guys are going through different things with treatment and all those different things. We'll see how everything responds and have more answers for you, probably Wednesday.

“I know he'll work to do everything he can do to get himself back. Obviously, he's a great player and a great teammate. We always need him on the field.”

Barkley’s season has already been interrupted once before. He dealt with a shoulder stinger in the Week 2 win at Tennessee and was limited to 12 snaps in that game.

Through the games he has played, he has carried the ball 36 times for 182 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per rush. He still hasn’t found the end zone this year after scoring seven touchdowns last season.

At 29, Barkley may be dealing with the wear that comes with the territory, but when he’s been on the field, he has still looked like the same bursty, explosive runner.

Bigsby had been Barkley’s primary backup for the last two seasons. Against the Rams, he handled 14 carries for 55 yards. For the year, he has 98 yards and a touchdown on 28 rushing attempts, good for a 3.3-yard average.

If Barkley can’t go against the Jaguars in London on Sunday, the Eagles would be down to Will Shipley at running back. Philadelphia also has three practice-squad backs who could be elevated or added to the roster to cover Bigsby’s absence: Carson Steele and Dameon Pierce, both of whom spent training camp with the team, and Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys last year who was released and claimed by Philly.

Eagles Suddenly Have A London Availability Problem Fans Need To Watch

The Eagles are heading into their London trip for Week 5 with more uncertainty than anyone in Philadelphia would like this early in the season. Multiple key starters are already on injured reserve, and several more have carried questionable tags as the team gets ready for Jacksonville, leaving the roster picture in flux at a point where the margin for error is already thin.

Landon Dickerson, Zack Baun and DeVonta Smith are among the names the team is monitoring most closely, and their availability could shape how the Eagles handle a game that comes with the added challenge of overseas travel. For a team trying to settle in and keep its season moving forward, the health report may end up mattering as much as the matchup itself. [Read more 🡒]

Rex Ryan Just Poured Fuel On A Brutal Eagles Debate

Rex Ryan added another layer to the conversation around Philadelphias offense after the loss to the Rams, going straight at the Eagles offensive line and calling it abysmal. The criticism landed because it came after a night when the group struggled to protect the quarterback, with pressure showing up repeatedly and injuries thinning out a unit that already had little margin for error without Lane Johnson on the field.

Jordan Mailata, though, isnt sounding the alarm in the same way. The veteran tackle said he believes the group can get better as the season goes on, which is the part of this debate that matters most for the Eagles: whether the lines rough start is just early-season turbulence or the first sign of a longer problem up front. Nick Foles Just Reopened A Tough Jalen Hurts Debate

Nick Foles critique of Jalen Hurts after the Eagles Week 4 loss to the Rams landed because it went straight to the part of Hurts game that has always invited scrutiny: how quickly he sees it and how decisively he lets it go. Philadelphias offense has been built around Hurts ability to extend plays and create with his legs, but in a game where the passing rhythm never really settled, Foles pointed to timing and pocket poise as the issue, saying Hurts appeared to freeze rather than trust the throw.

Hurts line against Los Angeles was uneven enough to keep the conversation alive, even with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. After the game, he didnt try to swat away the broader concern, instead framing it as part of the teams ongoing work and development. For the Eagles, that leaves the same familiar question hanging in the background: whether Hurts can keep growing into a more complete passer without losing the parts of his game that make the offense go.
