Eagles Are Flirting With Another Costly Saquon Barkley Decision

The Philadelphia Eagles risk repeating past mistakes as they balance immediate needs with long-term health by allowing Saquon Barkley to play through injuries.

The Eagles are staring at a familiar problem with Saquon Barkley, and it comes with a warning label they should already know by heart.

Philadelphia’s season has been battered by injuries, none bigger than the one that ended Jalen Hurts’ year. Hurts is out for the season after blood clots moved from his calf to his lungs, a situation that spiraled after he traveled to London for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The clot had been considered superficial at the time, but Hurts wound up in the hospital the night before the game, still played, then flew home immediately afterward. The condition worsened from there.

Now Barkley is the latest star the Eagles have to handle carefully, and the pattern feels uncomfortably similar. His year has already been a grind: a stinger in Week 2, a hamstring issue in Week 4, and then a back injury in the Eagles’ Week 7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He missed the first two practices this week before returning on Friday, and he carries no injury designation for Sunday night’s Week 8 matchup with the Washington Commanders.

That doesn’t mean the Eagles should be eager to unleash him.

Barkley’s effort against Dallas showed exactly why this is such a tricky call. He played just 10 snaps on Monday night, but he still managed 71 yards on nine touches.

Even so, he looked like he was fighting his own body every time he touched the ball. He was leaving the field after nearly every play.

There’s a line between toughness and pushing too far, and Barkley seems close to it. His willingness to play is not the issue. The question is whether the Eagles should let him.

At 2-5, Philadelphia’s season is hanging by a thread. The injury list is already long, with DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jihaad Campbell ruled out for the Commanders game. Barkley probably belongs on that list too, at least for now.

The bigger picture matters here. The Eagles need to think beyond one Sunday night game and protect what’s left of Barkley’s health. He’s not going to be fully right for the rest of the season because of the hamstring problem, but another week or two off would help.

This is where the team has to take the decision out of the player’s hands. After what happened with Hurts, the Eagles can’t afford to let another injured star talk himself into playing when the smarter move is to sit.

Barkley’s toughness is obvious. The risk is obvious too.

Eagles Send A Clear Message About Their Depth Before Commanders Game

The Eagles added some extra insurance for their Week 8 matchup with Washington by elevating running back Elijah Mitchell and edge rusher Mason Reiger from the practice squad. Mitchells move comes with some familiarity, since it is his second temporary elevation of the season, while Reiger is in line to make his Eagles debut as Philadelphia continues to manage the edges of its roster heading into a divisional game.

Philadelphia also left tight end Zach Ertz and cornerback Jakorian Bennett on injured reserve ahead of the Commanders game, keeping those spots unchanged for now. The decisions underscore how the Eagles are piecing together depth on the fly, with the practice squad again serving as a short-term solution as the team prepares for a key NFC East test. Eagles Face A Brutal Sunday Night Test They Desperately Need

Sunday night brings a tricky divisional measuring stick for the Eagles, who head into their matchup with Washington dealing with plenty of outside skepticism and a fair amount of uncertainty of their own. The buildup has centered on recent form, injuries and how both teams stack up right now, with analysts split on which side has the edge and plenty of attention on whether Philadelphia can steady itself in a game that could say a lot about where this season is headed.

Washingtons injury situation adds another layer to the matchup, even if the conversation around the game has mostly focused on how the Eagles respond under the lights. Philadelphia is staring at a test it badly needs, not just for the standings but for the tone it sets going forward, and the fact that so many predictions are still up in the air only underscores how much is riding on this one. Eagles Buyers Remorse Is Growing Around 3 Offseason Decisions

The Eagles 2026 season has already been shaped by injuries and a few offseason swings that have not landed the way the front office hoped. Among the biggest concerns is linebacker Jonathan Greenard, whose four-year deal was supposed to stabilize the defense but has instead been slowed by health issues and uneven play, leaving Philadelphia without the impact it expected from a major investment.

There is also the sting of what the Eagles gave up to make room for those moves. Nakobe Dean has found a strong fit with the Raiders, while second-round tight end Eli Stowers has barely been part of the offense and has yet to make a catch. For a team trying to stay competitive in a crowded NFC race, those decisions are starting to look less like calculated risks and more like missed opportunities. [Read more 🡒]
