Cooper DeJeans Struggles Are Becoming A Real Eagles Problem

Despite past accolades, Eagles star Cooper DeJean's current performance jeopardizes his expected lucrative contract extension, raising questions about his future value.

PHILADELPHIA - Cooper DeJean is running into an ugly kind of momentum shift at exactly the wrong time.

After a dominant 2025 season that earned him first-team All-Pro honors, the Eagles defensive back was supposed to be building toward a massive extension. Instead, his play this year has opened the door to a smaller payday if he doesn’t turn it around over the next two months. The market for elite cornerbacks and safeties is pushing past $25 million per season, and DeJean hasn’t looked like he belongs in that tier lately.

Sunday’s 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers was another rough showing. According to Pro Football Focus, DeJean missed three tackles and allowed three catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

It was part of a broader stretch of trouble in run support and after the catch, with DeJean missing 13 tackles through the first six weeks of the season. He entered Week 6 leading the league with 10 missed tackles.

The Eagles needed a nearly flawless defensive effort to steal the game, and they didn’t get it. DeJean’s mistakes were part of the problem, even as other defenders also gave up chunk plays.

After the game, DeJean didn’t dodge the issue.

“Yeah, I don’t know,” DeJean said after the game about why he’s struggling to tackle this season. “I just got to find ways to get guys down.

Part of it is different angles, where I’m hitting the guys. But I have no doubt that I’m going to continue to work on that and fix that.”

The Eagles have also shifted him into more safety work, and that added responsibility may be playing a role. Still, DeJean wasn’t interested in using that as a shield.

“Yeah, yeah, different position, but that’s not really an excuse to use,” DeJean said about missing a few tackles while playing safety. “I still got to be able to tackle better and get guys to the ground.”

The Panthers sealed the game with 6:39 left in the fourth quarter on another touchdown that appeared to land on DeJean. Tommy Tremble slipped past him for a 19-yard score in the back of the end zone, and DeJean said the play came down to a miscommunication in the secondary. Cornerback Riq Woolen was also in that area.

The bigger picture has gotten rough fast. DeJean said it plainly: “I don’t think I’ve ever lost this many games in any sport I’ve played in a row,” DeJean said. “So it’s pretty frustrating.”

Jordan Mailata Just Put Eagles Offense On Notice

The Eagles are trying to steady themselves after a 25-14 loss to the Panthers, a game that underscored how thin the margin gets when key pieces are unavailable. Without Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia has had to lean harder on the rest of the roster, and Jordan Mailata made clear the offense cannot afford to let the details slip while both players work through injuries and their return timelines stay unclear.

Mailata framed the fix in simple terms: the Eagles need better focus and effort to clean up the kind of mistakes that stall drives and pile up pressure on everyone else. With Dallas next on the schedule on October 26, Philadelphia does not have much time to sort out its rhythm, especially with Hurts calf issue and Barkleys hamstring injury still hanging over the offense. Jordan Mailata Just Put The Eagles Biggest Problem On Blast

The Eagles defense spent too much time chasing the Panthers in the 25-14 loss, and the imbalance showed up in a way that has become hard to ignore. With the offense sputtering on the ground and piling up penalties, Philadelphias front seven wound up absorbing the kind of workload that wears a team down long before the fourth quarter arrives.

Jordan Mailata did not shy away from saying the quiet part out loud after the game. The left tackle pointed to the offenses lack of discipline and accountability as a major reason the defense was left in that spot, underscoring how much the Eagles need the unit on the other side of the ball to clean up its act before the strain starts showing up in even bigger ways. Eagles Have An Under Center Problem They Cant Ignore

The Eagles work from under center has become hard to ignore after the loss to Carolina, where the offense leaned on play-action and got almost nothing out of it. The game plan included five under-center dropbacks, and none of those throws turned into completions as the pocket got squeezed and the rhythm never really showed up. It fit a larger pattern for Philadelphia this season, one that has made the most traditional part of the playbook look far less dependable than the shotgun looks this offense usually prefers.

Jalen Hurts has been part of the issue, too, with the numbers showing far less success when he is asked to operate from under center instead of in shotgun. Tanner McKee has had similar trouble in those situations, which leaves the Eagles with an uncomfortable question about how much of the offense can still live in that space. For a team trying to stay balanced and keep defenses honest, the under-center package is starting to look like a problem that cannot just be brushed aside. [Read more 🡒]
