The Chargers are getting a key piece of their offense back just in time for Monday night under the lights. Rookie running back Omarion Hampton, who’s been sidelined since fracturing his left ankle in Week 5, has officially been activated and is expected to suit up against the Eagles. That’s a big development for a Chargers offense that’s been searching for rhythm-and now gets one of its most dynamic weapons back.
Before the injury, Hampton was starting to look like exactly what the Chargers hoped for when they took him in the first round. In five games, he racked up 314 rushing yards, added 136 more through the air on 22 catches, and found the end zone twice.
More than the numbers, it was the way he ran-decisive, physical, and with a burst that gave this offense a different gear. He was becoming a focal point, and now, after a nearly two-month layoff, the Bolts are hoping he can pick up right where he left off.
That said, don’t expect Hampton to be handed the full workload right away. Kimani Vidal has stepped up in his absence, and he’s made a strong case to stay involved.
Vidal has topped 100 total yards in two of the last three weeks, showing versatility and consistency. Even with Hampton back, there’s every reason to believe this will remain a two-headed backfield-at least for now.
That could be a good thing for Los Angeles, especially as they look to keep Hampton fresh and ease him back into game speed.
Of course, the Chargers have more than just the running back position to monitor heading into Monday night. Quarterback Justin Herbert is dealing with a fracture in his non-throwing hand and underwent surgery earlier this week.
As of Saturday, he’s officially listed as questionable. That puts his status firmly in the air and puts backup Trey Lance on standby.
If Herbert can’t go, it’ll be Lance’s show-a significant shift for an offense that relies heavily on Herbert’s arm talent and command of the system.
On the other side, the Eagles are dealing with injury issues of their own, and they’re not minor. Star right tackle Lane Johnson and disruptive defensive tackle Jalen Carter are both expected to miss the game. That’s a blow to both sides of the ball for Philadelphia-Johnson is a cornerstone of the offensive line, and Carter has been a force in the middle of the defense all season.
Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET from SoFi Stadium, and with playoff implications looming, this one carries some weight.
The Chargers are looking to stay in the mix, and getting Hampton back is a step in the right direction. But with Herbert’s status in question and the Eagles still dangerous despite their injuries, Monday night could turn into a test of depth, adaptability, and who can make the most of the pieces they have available.
