The Broncos are deep into their search for a new offensive coordinator, and the latest name in the mix is Brian Johnson - a coach with a fast-rising résumé and plenty of experience shaping quarterbacks. According to reports, Denver recently interviewed Johnson, who currently serves as the Commanders’ assistant head coach and passing game coordinator.
Johnson’s name carries weight in coaching circles, and not just because of his title. At 37, he’s already built a decade-plus of experience across both the college and NFL levels. He’s also in the running for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job, a sign that his services are in high demand.
Denver’s OC search is starting to take shape. They’ve already spoken with Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry, and there’s growing momentum around current QBs coach Davis Webb, who recently pulled out of the Raiders’ head coaching search. Webb’s decision to stay in Denver has fueled speculation that he could be promoted from within - but the Broncos are clearly doing their due diligence.
As for Johnson, his coaching journey began back in 2010 when he took on the quarterbacks coach role at Utah, eventually rising to offensive coordinator. From there, he moved through Mississippi State, Houston, and Florida, where he continued to refine his offensive philosophy and quarterback development chops. In 2021, the Eagles brought him in as their QBs coach, and by 2023, he had been promoted to offensive coordinator.
That 2023 season with the Eagles had its ups and downs, but the numbers tell a story of a unit that could move the ball. Philadelphia ranked eighth in total yards and seventh in points scored.
They were eighth in rushing - no surprise given their physical offensive line and mobile quarterback - and 16th in passing yards. It wasn’t a perfect season, but it was far from a disaster.
Still, Johnson was let go after just one year as OC, and he quickly landed with the Commanders ahead of the 2024 season, taking on a dual role that gave him influence over both the passing game and the broader offensive structure.
Now, he’s back in the mix for another coordinator role - and potentially a better fit. If the Broncos are looking for a young, innovative mind with experience developing quarterbacks and calling plays at the highest level, Johnson checks a lot of boxes. Whether he ends up in Denver, Houston, or stays put for another year, he’s clearly a name to watch in the ongoing OC carousel.
