The Buffalo Bills took a hit at training camp on Saturday morning when veteran safety CJ Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field after suffering a lower leg injury.
Gardner-Johnson went down during 11-on-11 drills, and trainers quickly escorted him to the medical tent before a team member drove him to the locker room. Multiple reports confirmed the injury involved his lower leg, and it appeared he was rolled up on when his right foot got caught. Staff spent several minutes examining the back of his leg.
It was a frustrating turn for a player who had been one of the early standouts in camp. Buffalo signed Gardner-Johnson this offseason to bring more fight and ball-hawking ability to the secondary, and coaches had projected him as the starting strong safety.
The veteran has made the rounds since entering the league as a fourth-round pick. He began his career with the Saints in 2019, then had stops with the Eagles twice, the Lions, the Texans and the Bears before landing in Buffalo.
The Bills wanted him to help bring more physicality to a secondary that needed it, and the early practices suggested he could provide exactly that.
Once Gardner-Johnson left the field, Geno Stone moved in with the starters alongside Cole Bishop, while rookie Jalon Kilgore remains in the mix at safety. If Gardner-Johnson misses significant time, that could open a real opportunity for the younger players.
The injury comes at a bad time for a defense still trying to settle in. Buffalo has made competition and depth a central theme of camp, and the early buzz around Gardner-Johnson had been positive. He brought the energy and instincts the coaching staff was looking for.
There was at least one encouraging sign: one report noted he could walk after the initial evaluation. Even so, further testing will determine how serious the issue is.
For now, the Bills are left waiting on more medical information while they continue to sort through options in the secondary. Depth has already been a focus after recent roster moves, and any extended absence would create a clear hole at strong safety.
Training camp injuries have a way of shifting the depth chart fast. Buffalo added Gardner-Johnson for his experience and toughness, and losing him even briefly would put the next man up to the test.

Lane Johnsons Camp Absence Raises A Real Eagles Concern
Lane Johnson was among four players excused from practice on the fourth day of Eagles training camp, a pause that stood out because of how important he remains to Philadelphias offensive line. The team is already juggling injuries to Cameron Williams and Cole Wisniewski, so any absence from a veteran of Johnsons stature naturally gets attention, even in the early days of camp.
The concern is less about one missed practice than what it could mean for how the Eagles plan to handle him going forward. Johnsons health has been a major talking point since last season, and with camp still in its early phase, Philadelphia has plenty of reason to be careful about how much it asks of one of its most vital players. Landon Dickersons New Approach Could Change Everything For Eagles Up Front
Landon Dickerson spent part of the offseason looking back at a decision that weighed on his play last year, when he pushed through a knee injury after meniscus surgery instead of waiting until he was fully healed. For a lineman whose job depends on power, balance and staying anchored snap after snap, that kind of compromise can matter in a hurry. Dickerson said the experience changed how he views recovery, and it sounds like the Eagles are getting a more cautious version of one of the most important pieces up front.
He also brushed aside a few of the more dramatic whispers that followed him around, including the idea that he had seriously considered stepping away from football. Instead, his focus has been on getting right and staying right, including stem cell therapy this offseason as part of the healing process. For Philadelphia, the bigger takeaway is simple enough: if Dickerson is able to return closer to himself, it could make a real difference for an offensive line that depends on his stability. Eagles Suddenly Face An O-Line Depth Concern They Didn't Expect
The Eagles were already working through the usual churn of training camp when rookie offensive lineman Jaeden Roberts went down during the final play of a developmental session. Medical staff rushed in right away, and the undrafted free agent signing was carted off the field, an unwelcome sight for a position group that can never really have too many workable bodies in August.
Roberts had been part of the depth picture after joining Philadelphia following the 2026 NFL Draft, with his role always centered more on development and backup insurance than immediate headlines. Now the concern is less about where he fit on the depth chart and more about how the Eagles patch together the line if the injury proves to be the kind that lingers, because camp injuries at this spot tend to ripple quickly through the rest of the roster.
