A.J. Brown’s first rep against the Eagles brought the kind of jolt everyone expected.
Wednesday’s opening joint practice between Philadelphia and New England at Gillette Stadium quickly turned into a showcase for the former Eagle, who lined up across from cornerback Quinyon Mitchell on the first 1-on-1 snap. Brown took a shot deep on a go ball, Mitchell stayed glued to him, and the pass hit the ground incomplete. The intensity was there right away, and the moment had plenty of people buzzing.
Brown’s arrival on the field didn’t come with much warmth, either. Videos shared by The Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski showed Brown jogging past his former teammates as he headed out to practice. Before practice, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel spoke highly of Brown and pointed to what he sees as growth since their Tennessee days. “Just the way that he communicates with coaches, the way he communicates with players, just I would say an overall maturity,” Vrabel said Wednesday.
“He’s accountable, gets mistakes corrected. You can coach him hard… he wants to do well for the entire offense.”
ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio also reported that Brown has been present for all 18 Patriots practices during training camp.
Brown’s path to New England came after a productive run in Philadelphia that included helping the Eagles win a Super Bowl after the 2024 season. But his 2025 campaign ended with frustration, and he eventually told the team he wanted to play elsewhere. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman then traded him to New England.
Now Brown is trying to get back to Pro Bowl form with a new quarterback in third-year passer Drake Maye. The Eagles and Patriots will practice again Thursday before meeting Saturday in a preseason game at Gillette Stadium.
