A.J. Brown’s first rep against the Eagles brought the kind of jolt everyone expected.
Wednesday’s opening joint practice between Philadelphia and New England at Gillette Stadium quickly turned into a showcase for the former Eagle, who lined up across from cornerback Quinyon Mitchell on the first 1-on-1 snap. Brown took a shot deep on a go ball, Mitchell stayed glued to him, and the pass hit the ground incomplete. The intensity was there right away, and the moment had plenty of people buzzing.
Brown’s arrival on the field didn’t come with much warmth, either. Videos shared by The Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski showed Brown jogging past his former teammates as he headed out to practice. He was back on the same field with the group he once played alongside, but the reunion didn’t exactly look like a long catch-up session.
There was no shortage of reaction to the opening rep. One fan wrote, “I’ve seen AJ drop that ball a dozen times he’s in mid season form already,” while another said, “Aj trying to push off a little smh.” A third added, “That’s the AJ I remember”
Before practice, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel spoke highly of Brown and pointed to what he sees as growth since their Tennessee days. “Just the way that he communicates with coaches, the way he communicates with players, just I would say an overall maturity,” Vrabel said Wednesday.
“He’s accountable, gets mistakes corrected. You can coach him hard… he wants to do well for the entire offense.”
ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio also reported that Brown has been present for all 18 Patriots practices during training camp.
Brown’s path to New England came after a productive run in Philadelphia that included helping the Eagles win a Super Bowl after the 2024 season. But his 2025 campaign ended with frustration, and he eventually told the team he wanted to play elsewhere. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman then traded him to New England.
Now Brown is trying to get back to Pro Bowl form with a new quarterback in third-year passer Drake Maye. The Eagles and Patriots will practice again Thursday before meeting Saturday in a preseason game at Gillette Stadium.

A.J. Browns Hurts Comments Hit A Nerve For Eagles Fans
A.J. Browns latest comments have kept his old Eagles connection in the spotlight, even after the wideout was dealt to New England on June 1. Brown and Jalen Hurts have not spoken since the trade, but both sides have still described the relationship in respectful terms, with Brown making clear he holds positive feelings about Philadelphia even as he turns his attention to what comes next with the Patriots.
For Eagles fans, the remarks land in a sensitive spot because this was never just about a roster move. Brown and Hurts were linked by mutual respect and a friendship that reportedly deteriorated before the trade, so every public comment now carries a little extra weight. Brown is trying to look forward, but the silence between two players who once meant so much to each other remains part of the story. [Read more 🡒]
Eagles Suddenly Face A Huge Question About Their New $100 Million Pass Rusher
Jonathan Greenard was supposed to give Philadelphia an immediate jolt off the edge after the Eagles traded for him and locked him into a contract extension, but his training camp has quickly become about availability instead of impact. The pectoral strain that has kept him sidelined still has no clear recovery timetable, leaving the team to wait on a player it viewed as a key part of the pass rush picture.
Vic Fangio has already voiced concern about Greenard potentially missing the start of the regular season, and the situation only gets trickier from there. Greenard is on the physically unable to perform list, which means the Eagles would have to plan without him for at least the first four games if he remains there when the season opens, a tough development for a defense that was counting on his presence from the outset. Mike Vrabel Just Backed What Eagles Fans Have Said About Jalen Hurts
Mike Vrabels latest comments landed like a familiar refrain for Eagles fans who have watched the organization build around Jalen Hurts. The Patriots coach credited Philadelphias sustained success to the kind of quarterback stability every team is chasing, while also pointing to the broader formula behind it - drafting well, keeping the right players in place and, most of all, finding a leader under center who can carry the rest.
Hurts has already supplied plenty of evidence for that argument, with multiple Pro Bowl nods, two Super Bowl trips, a title, and Super Bowl MVP honors to go with a winning track record in the regular season. For Philadelphia, the larger takeaway is the one fans have been making for a while now: when the quarterback is the right one, the rest of the roster gets a much clearer path to staying in the championship mix.
