VJ Edgecombe may be headed for a very different kind of season in 2026-27, and that’s exactly why he could end up surprising the NBA.
The 21-year-old arrived in Philadelphia as the No. 3 overall pick in a draft class that also featured Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper and Kon Knueppel, and he barely looked like a rookie once the games started. Edgecombe put up 16 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 51% overall, then finished third in the Rookie of the Year race after starting 75 games. With Paul George and Joel Embiid missing time, he spent much of the year as Philadelphia’s clear second option behind Tyrese Maxey.
That kind of workload is unlikely to be waiting for him again.
The new-look 76ers are widely expected to chase a championship next season, and a lot of people believe that will squeeze Edgecombe’s role and minutes. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown joining the mix only intensified that idea, with some already assuming Edgecombe will be pushed into a smaller lane. Rich Paul, though, was among the first to address that concern, saying LeBron and Brown’s presence would be a benefit for the young guard.
And there’s a pretty obvious upside to all of this for Edgecombe. He gets to be part of a team with real title expectations in just his second season, while also learning from veterans who know exactly what winning at the highest level looks like. Brown and LeBron bring that kind of experience, and Paul made it clear that Edgecombe can soak in a lot from the players around him.
Still, the minutes aren’t going to disappear entirely. Edgecombe averaged 35 minutes per game across his 75 starts last season, second only to Maxey, and the 76ers will still need him.
Injuries to LeBron James and Joel Embiid could open the door for bigger nights, especially late in the regular season, and there will be stretches where Edgecombe is once again asked to be the top guy. He has also said he’s excited about the chance to play alongside his senior teammates.
He’s not walking into the season as just another young piece, either. Brown recently said, “I love VJ already. That’s one of my favorite people in the world, and we just met,” per The Inquirer.
Nick Nurse also gave Edgecombe a strong endorsement: “I always say that we got a eight-year vet right out of the blocks with his composure and his demeanor,”
So even if he’s not starting every night, Edgecombe still has a path to a huge year. He could anchor the bench, pop up in big games, and even force his way into the Sixth Man of the Year conversation. The talent is already there, and now he’s in a spot where the people around him can help push him even further.

3 Sixers Already Facing Serious Long-Term Questions
For a Sixers team already thinking ahead to the 2026-27 season, there are a few roster names whose long-term futures are anything but settled. Justin Edwards, Jabari Walker and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope each bring a different kind of question, but all three land in the same place: none looks locked into Philadelphias plans beyond the short term, and each one has something to prove before the organization has to decide what comes next.
Edwards still has to show he can keep taking steps as a young player fighting for staying power, while Walkers contract structure gives the team an early off-ramp if things do not line up. Caldwell-Pope is on a one-year deal, which naturally keeps the spotlight on both his fit and the clubs appetite to extend the relationship. For a front office that has spent years trying to balance urgency with flexibility, these are the kinds of decisions that can quietly shape the next phase of the roster. [Read more 🡒]
Knicks Suddenly Have A Josh Hart Concern They Can't Ignore
The Knicks are heading toward opening night with a familiar sort of unease around Josh Hart, who has already been managing a lingering finger injury while also sitting out the preseason finale because of an ankle issue. The ankle does not appear to be the bigger immediate worry, according to coach Mike Brown, but the combination of concerns has made Harts status something New York will have to track closely right up to the start of the season.
What makes this especially tricky is that the finger problem has been hanging around long enough to raise the kind of questions teams hate this time of year. Hart remains uncertain for the opener, and the Knicks will be watching the days leading into it carefully as they try to sort out how much they can count on one of their most important all-around pieces. Jimmy Butler Just Reopened A 76ers Feud Fans Never Forgot
Jimmy Butler has a way of keeping old basketball debates alive, even when he is not on the floor. While rehabbing an ACL injury with a projected return somewhere between January and February, Butler used a SiriusXM radio appearance to stir up fresh chatter around the 76ers by talking about Philadelphias offseason pursuit of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, then framing his current team, the Golden State Warriors, as a matchup that will test them when the two sides meet.
For Sixers fans, it is the kind of comment that brings back a familiar what-if conversation about how different things might have looked if the franchise had landed another star when it had the chance. It also adds another layer to a game that already carries plenty of intrigue, since Butlers absence does not make the challenge any less pointed, only more delayed until he is healthy enough to step back into the spotlight.
