The 76ers have opened the season with the kind of punch that turns heads. They knocked off the reigning champion Knicks on the night New York raised its banner, then followed that by erasing a big deficit against the Cavaliers, a comeback that made it clear just how dangerous Nick Nurse’s top five can be.
But the new-look lineup has also brought a little turbulence for second-year wing VJ Edgecombe.
Through two games, Edgecombe has been the quietest scorer among Philadelphia’s starting five at 10.0 points per game. The next-lowest starter, LeBron James, is at 15.5, which shows how far behind Edgecombe sits in that category right now.
The gap isn’t just in points, either. His shot volume has dipped to 10.5 field-goal attempts per game, down from 13.7 in his rookie year, and the touch hasn’t been there yet either: he’s shooting 14.3% from three and 60% at the foul line.
That might be nothing more than a small-sample slump. It also reflects a real change in how the offense is arranged.
With James and Jaylen Brown now in the picture, Edgecombe is no longer getting the same share of the looks he had before. He’s adjusting to a role where the pecking order looks a lot different, and that naturally changes where and how he gets involved as a scorer.
For a young player trying to carve out his place, that can be a tricky landing spot. Edgecombe was once operating in a more balanced shot distribution alongside Paul George; now he’s navigating a setup where Brown and James are getting their turns first. That kind of shift takes time, and Nurse still has to protect the development of a player who figures to matter for Philadelphia long term.
The encouraging part is that Edgecombe has already shown he can contribute in ways that go beyond scoring.
After settling in on Tuesday, he made his presence felt against Cleveland with a well-rounded line: 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, plus a team-high +19. His rebounding helped, his playmaking helped, and his defensive activity really stood out as he kept pressuring the Cavs and making life difficult on that end.
That’s the tradeoff for Philadelphia. This roster was built to chase a title right now, and James and Brown are the more immediate fits for that mission. Edgecombe taking a smaller scoring role is part of that equation, even if it means some early growing pains for a player coming off a strong debut season.
The bigger picture still looks promising for him. If he keeps doing the work, keeps buying into the little things, and keeps learning beside Brown and James, this stretch could wind up being an important step in his development into the next face of the franchise.

Tyrese Maxey Just Challenged A Stephen A. Smith Sixers Story
Tyrese Maxey pushed back hard on a story that had tied him to the frustration around the 2023 playoffs, flatly denying Stephen A. Smiths claim that he showed up at Doc Rivers home upset over James Hardens effort. Maxey said he has never even been to Rivers house, cutting straight through a rumor that had lingered around one of the more uneasy stretches of the recent Sixers era.
The denial adds another layer to a storyline that has refused to fade, especially with Maxey and Harden already sharing a tense moment on the floor during a recent game Philadelphia won after digging out of a big deficit. For the Sixers, it is another reminder that the Harden chapter still has loose ends, and that even a simple postgame exchange can get folded into the larger history of that postseason. [Read more 🡒]
Sixers Get A Huge Chance Against A Very Different Bucks Team
Milwaukee looks nothing like the team Philadelphia has spent years game-planning for, and that makes this matchup feel more open-ended than usual. The Bucks have turned over the core of their roster, sending Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami while folding four former Heat players into the rotation, and the early returns have been unmistakable. Through two games, those newcomers have accounted for more than half of Milwaukees scoring, but the overall picture has been shaky on the defensive end.
That is where the Sixers can see an opening. Philadelphia has been leaning on strong second-half play and has been winning the paint battle in recent games, two traits that tend to travel when the offense gets tight. The challenge now is whether the Bucks new-look group can stabilize quickly enough to make this a true test, or whether the Sixers can keep pressing an opponent still trying to find its footing on both sides of the floor. Bucks Fans Are Still Waiting On One Huge 76ers Decision
The 76ers head into their matchup with the Bucks in a good early rhythm, having opened the season with two wins and with Joel Embiid healthy and expected to play. Philadelphia has had enough going right to make this a meaningful early test, especially with Milwaukee waiting and the teams still feeling out where they stand this season.
One of the bigger notes attached to the game is the injury-management watch around LeBron James, who is listed as questionable because of back injury management. The approach is clearly cautious, with the aim of preserving him for the playoffs, while Dean Wade and Ariel Hukporti remain sidelined, leaving the Bucks to monitor availability as they try to get an early read on a conference rival.
