That Former Sixers Scare Somehow Turned Into A Huge Relief

Guerschon Yabusele's NBA exit is not the disaster the Sixers feared, as he finds redemption in European basketball stardom.

Guerschon Yabusele’s exit from the NBA wound up looking a lot less painful for the Sixers than it did when he first left Philadelphia.

What seemed like a gut punch last summer - Yabusele leaving on a two-year, $12 million deal with the Knicks - never really turned into the nightmare many in Philadelphia might have feared. He played just 8.9 minutes per game across 41 games in New York before being moved to Chicago, and now he’s headed back overseas after agreeing to a three-year deal with Panathinaikos.

The twist is that Yabusele technically had a hand in helping New York, too. He gave up his $5.8 million player option for the 2026-27 season, a move that opened the door for the Knicks to trade him to Chicago. That decision also made the Jose Alvarado trade possible.

That kind of selflessness fits the image Yabusele built in Philadelphia. His return to the NBA after his play at the 2024 Olympics made him an easy player to root for, and he quickly became a fan favorite before the story ran its course.

For Yabusele, Panathinaikos gives him a chance to get back to being a top EuroLeague player after a rough NBA season. When he waived his player option in February, he said he "wanted to play basketball at the end of the day." That’s exactly what he’ll do now.

The Sixers can at least take some comfort in how this played out. They didn’t have to watch Yabusele become a lasting problem in New York, even if it was hard to pull against him there, too. And after all the frustration Philadelphia has dealt with over the years, that matters.

His departure also arrives with another familiar wrinkle for the Sixers. Andre Drummond is the latest former Philadelphia center to head to New York in free agency, signing with the Knicks as their new backup center after Mitchell Robinson signed with the Celtics.

The Sixers will be hoping that move doesn’t fizzle the way Yabusele’s Knicks stint did. At least they have Ariel Hukporti now.

Lakers Could Circle Back To A Former Sixers Fan Frustration

The Lakers have already addressed one need by signing Kevon Looney to a one-year deal as a backup center, but they are still weighing another move on the wing. Jonathan Kuminga is among the names in the mix, and Matisse Thybulle has surfaced as the kind of defensive-minded option that could fit if Los Angeles decides to go a different direction.

For Sixers fans, Thybulle's name still carries plenty of recognition because of the havoc he used to create on the perimeter in Philadelphia. Jovan Buhas read on the Lakers' thinking points to him as a possible fallback, which is the sort of twist that keeps a former fan frustration in the rumor mill even after he has moved on from the East Coast. Celtics Just Shocked The East By Splitting Up Jayson Tatum And Jaylen Brown

The Celtics have made one of the boldest calls in the East, ending the long-running Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown pairing and signaling a clear shift in how they want to build. Bostons decision reflects a belief that Tatum is the better player to anchor the franchise, a stance that closes the book on nearly a decade of the two wings sharing the spotlight and reshapes the balance of power in the conference.

For Philadelphia, the move adds another layer to a rivalry that already had plenty of edge, because Brown now enters the picture on the other side of one of the leagues most familiar matchups. The bigger question is how Bostons new direction will hold up once the games matter, especially with the Celtics making it plain that Tatum is the centerpiece and not part of any trade discussion. Dean Wade Just Got His First Real Philly Warning

Dean Wade is already getting a feel for what life looks like in Philadelphia after signing with the 76ers this offseason. The forward is expected to step into the starting power forward role and fit alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, which means the spotlight will be on him from the start in a city that tends to notice everything, especially from new faces.

Former teammate Georges Niang has given Wade a preview of what comes with that stage, and it is not exactly subtle. The message was simple: the fanbase can be as good as any in the league, but only if a player handles the game the right way, and in Philadelphia that standard is never far away. [Read more 🡒]
