VJ Edgecombe Heads to LA for Rising Stars Challenge, Soaking Up a Special Rookie Season
As the Sixers hit the All-Star break sitting at 30-24, most of the roster is ready to catch their breath before the final 28-game push. But for rookie guard VJ Edgecombe, the break brings a different kind of opportunity - one that doesn’t involve rest, but recognition.
Edgecombe, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s draft, is headed to Los Angeles for the Rising Stars Challenge, where he’ll suit up for Team Vince on Friday night. It’s a well-earned honor in a standout rookie campaign that’s seen him average 14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists - numbers that speak not just to his talent, but to the poise he’s brought to a contending Sixers squad.
“I’m super excited,” Edgecombe said Wednesday, flashing the kind of energy that’s become his trademark on and off the court. “It’s a blessing to be on that stage in LA. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
And he won’t be alone. Edgecombe will be joined out West by teammate and friend Tyrese Maxey, who’s set to take part in both the 3-point contest and the All-Star Game, as well as big man Trendon Watford, who's tagging along to support. For Edgecombe, it’s more than just a trip - it’s a moment to share with those closest to him.
“Showing love,” Edgecombe said, describing the bond between the trio. “It’s love between all three of us all the time.
Credit to them. Credit to TWatt for spending his break with us, and obviously Tyrese gotta be there, but I’m excited.
I’m excited to see Tyrese in the 3-point contest and the All-Star game.”
The Rising Stars Challenge is often a glimpse into the NBA’s future - and Edgecombe’s presence there is a sign of just how quickly he’s arrived. He’s helped stabilize a Sixers team that’s navigating the Eastern Conference playoff race with eyes on a deep run, and his all-around game has added a new dimension to their backcourt.
But even amid the spotlight in LA, Edgecombe is keeping his priorities grounded. After the game, he plans to spend some much-needed time with family - a reward just as meaningful as any All-Star festivities.
“Spend time with my family, to be honest!” he said with a grin.
“And competing and then my family. I get to see my family.”
For Edgecombe, it’s been a whirlwind start to his NBA journey - and it’s far from over. The Sixers return to action on Feb. 19 against the Atlanta Hawks, with the rookie poised to play a key role down the stretch. But for now, he’s embracing every bit of the All-Star experience - and making sure he shares it with the people who matter most.
