Sixers Suddenly Have A Roster Problem They May Not Be Able To Fix

The 76ers face a challenging roster dilemma as injury woes and financial constraints collide, leaving them scrambling for solutions before the season begins.

The Philadelphia 76ers are suddenly boxed in after Ariel Hukporti’s season-ending Achilles injury, and the problem is bigger than just losing a backup big man.

Hukporti tore his Achilles in the preseason opener against the New York Knicks, wiping out what was supposed to be an important role behind Joel Embiid after his move from New York this summer. That leaves a real opening in Philadelphia’s frontcourt, but the Sixers may not have the flexibility to patch it the way they’d like.

NBA insider Brett Siegel laid out the bind on a new episode of Clutch Scoops with Tomer Azarly, pointing to the team’s cap situation as the real roadblock.

“The biggest issue is that [the Sixers] are $1.8 million from their first apron hard cap… Can they just add somebody else? They can’t… They can waive Jabari Walker… They could trade Hukporti’s contract to go after a guy like Mason Plumlee or Bismack Biyombo… But it seems like they’re gonna keep this roster as is heading into the season,” Siegel said.

That leaves Philadelphia weighing a thin group of options. Tacko Fall and Adem Bona are in the mix in the frontcourt, but Hukporti was supposed to provide the kind of interior depth the Sixers now have to do without.

There is at least one possible financial route available. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Philadelphia is eligible to apply for a $1.7 million disabled player exception, which would equal half of Hukporti’s 2026-27 salary.

Even so, the Sixers still can’t simply sign a replacement into the open roster spot unless they move money out first, either by waiving a player or making a small trade to create enough room under the first apron.

Philadelphia has three preseason games left to sort through the mess, with matchups against the Brooklyn Nets and the Boston Celtics twice more before the games start counting. The regular season opens on the road against the New York Knicks on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. ET.

Justin Edwards Already Has A 76ers Roster Battle To Win

The 76ers summer roster shuffle has already created a small but meaningful preseason competition, and Justin Edwards may be right in the middle of it. Philadelphia added two-way wing Rayan Rupert, a fourth-year player whose athleticism and defensive upside could make him a different kind of fit on a team still sorting through how it wants to play this season. For a roster trying to find useful, complementary minutes anywhere it can, the battle for wing reps is suddenly worth watching.

Edwards enters camp with a simpler calling card as a spot-up shooter, but that alone may not be enough if the Sixers lean harder into size, activity and defensive versatility on the perimeter. Ruperts profile gives him a clear chance to push for preseason playing time, and how the teams evolving style takes shape could decide whether Edwards stays in a more consistent role or gets squeezed by the new competition. In a camp full of open questions, this is one of the quieter ones that could still matter. [Read more 🡒]

Nick Nurse Pushes Back On Joel Embiid Report Drawing Attention

A stray report about Joel Embiid found its way into the spotlight this week, and Nick Nurse made it clear he did not put much stock in it. The story, circulated by New York Knicks announcer Mike Breen, claimed LeBron James reprimanded Embiid for being late to practice, but James quickly denied the incident and Breen later apologized and retracted the account.

For the 76ers, the bigger takeaway was Nurses reaction to the noise around his star center. He defended Embiid and said he was surprised the report had even surfaced, a small reminder of how quickly an unverified story can follow Philadelphias most important player and create an unnecessary distraction around the team. LeBron Could Be Headed For A Role Sixers Fans Never Expected

LeBron James arrived in Philadelphia this summer after eight seasons with the Lakers, and the early conversation around his fit has already gone beyond the usual star-usage chatter. With injuries and roster needs shaping the way the Sixers will have to piece things together, head coach Nick Nurse said James is expected to handle multiple positions as the team figures out how to use his size and versatility.

Nurse also pointed to James conditioning and work ethic during the offseason, which only adds to the intrigue around how much responsibility he may be asked to carry. For Sixers fans, the bigger surprise is not that James can adapt, but that the adjustment could include stretches at center, a role few would have imagined when he first put on a Philadelphia uniform.
