The Philadelphia 76ers may not be done mining the international market for help, and Aaron Holiday is now a name worth filing away.
Holiday, who most recently played for the Houston Rockets, is headed to Italy for the 2026-2027 season to suit up for Maxima Roma in the Italian Basket Serie A league. The move takes him out of the NBA for now after a run in the league that began in 2018. But the key detail is tucked into the deal itself: per Marc Stein of The Stein Line, Holiday has an NBA out in his contract, meaning he can be bought out if an NBA team, such as the Sixers, wants to bring him back.
That makes Holiday a possible emergency lever for Philadelphia if the buyout market does not break the way the team wants.
Right now, the 76ers have an open roster spot and no immediate plan to use it. They also appear unwilling to move on from Jabari Walker, whose contract is partially guaranteed. So, for the moment, the club seems likely to wait until later in the winter before making that kind of move.
Holiday would fit the profile of a depth guard rather than a headline-grabber. In Houston this past season, he played 13.7 minutes per game off the bench and averaged 5.5 points, 1.1 assists, and 1.0 rebounds. His playoff shooting was rough, though, as he hit only 27.3% of his field goals during the Rockets’ 2026 postseason run while averaging 2.7 points in 11.2 minutes per game.
Even with that stretch, Holiday’s track record still has appeal. He has shot 38.4% from three over his career and averaged 6.4 points per game, and he’s also been viewed as a dependable defender despite being undersized.
Philadelphia has already shown it is willing to go overseas when it sees a fit. In 2024, the team helped Guerschon Yabusele secure a buyout from Real Madrid. It later added Lonnie Walker during the 2024-2025 season after he left Zalgiris Kaunas, and last season it brought back Camp Payne after getting him out of Partizan Belgrade in Serbia.
The Sixers’ guard group is already crowded near the top, with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Anfernee Simons, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Still, if rookie Labaron Philon isn’t ready for a steady bench role, Holiday has enough experience to at least stay on the radar.

Sixers May Have Found A Low Cost Fix Behind Joel Embiid
The Sixers enter the 2026-27 season looking as if the starting group is already set, with Joel Embiid flanked by LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in what would be an imposing top end. The deeper question is what comes after that, especially on the back line where Philadelphia could still use a cheaper answer than another splashy move.
One name that stands out is a big man with the kind of size and rim protection teams always end up chasing when the market tightens. Indiana is expected to be careful with its core, which makes the search trickier, but this option has the appeal of being more realistic than a lot of the alternatives and comes with the durability of a full season in 2025-26. For a Sixers team built around star power, finding a workable fix behind Embiid may be the kind of under-the-radar move that matters most. [Read more 🡒]
Hawks Just Created A New Problem For The Sixers In The East
Atlantas offseason moves have only sharpened the picture of a team the Sixers may have to deal with again in the East. By keeping CJ McCollum and Jock Landale and adding Lu Dort and Aaron Wiggins, the Hawks have given Quin Snyder a deeper, more versatile group for the 2026-27 season, one that looks built around a solid top nine and a lot more lineup flexibility than they had before.
For Philadelphia, the more immediate concern is less about one splashy addition than about how much harder Atlanta has made it to game-plan against them over the long haul. Snyder now has to sort out how the pieces fit, and the Hawks still may not be done tinkering if a trade opportunity opens up during the season. For a Sixers team trying to climb the conference ladder, that is the kind of roster momentum that can quietly change the standings picture. [Read more 🡒]
VJ Edgecombe Is Forcing A 76ers Question Fans Will Love
VJ Edgecombes summer run with Team Bahamas has only added to the sense that the 76ers may have something more on their hands heading into next season. The sophomore guard has been leading the way in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with strong statistical production, and for a Philadelphia team that already leans on established stars, his development is suddenly starting to look like more than just a nice bonus.
Edgecombes international work gives the 76ers another layer to think about when it comes to ball distribution and playing time. If his role continues to grow, the team will have to sort out where those minutes come from and how much responsibility he can handle alongside the players already in place, which is exactly the kind of good problem that can make a roster more interesting.
