Sixers LeBron Buzz Suddenly Feels A Lot More Real

As the Philadelphia 76ers ramp up their recruitment efforts, VJ Edgecombe shares his excitement about the prospect of joining forces with his childhood idol LeBron James.

VJ Edgecombe isn’t hiding how he feels about the possibility of LeBron James ending up in Philadelphia.

After a strong rookie season, the 76ers guard said he’d be more than happy to share the floor with James in year two. Edgecombe has already made his admiration clear, and this time he took it public while the Sixers continue their push to bring James to town, along with All-Star Jaylen Brown, ahead of James’ Sixers debut.

For Edgecombe, the answer starts and ends with what James still means to him.

“It’s LeBron James. At the end of the day, despite how old he is, he’s still, to me, the greatest player of all time,” Edgecombe said. “I mean, if I get to play alongside LeBron, that would be amazing.”

That kind of reaction tracks with how Edgecombe has talked about James before. Entering the 2025-26 season, he said James was his favorite player growing up and told reporters that facing him was the matchup he was most excited about in his first NBA season.

Philadelphia’s interest in James comes as the franchise has already reshaped its outlook after the trade with the Celtics for Brown. With Tyrese Maxey, Brown, Edgecombe and Joel Embiid in the mix, the 76ers would be pushing even harder into contender territory if James were added to the group.

That’s part of why the recruiting effort has already started. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Sixers’ core has been working on James, with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown all in communication with him. McMenamin said Maxey has been leading the charge.

The 76ers, along with the Cavs and the Heat, are viewed as the favorites with the best odds to land James. If that happens, Edgecombe would clearly be ready for it.

Kevin Durant Just Put A Powerful Label On The New-Look Sixers

Kevin Durant made a stop at the MLB All-Star event in Philadelphia and ended up offering a notable take on the 76ers new direction after their trade for Jaylen Brown. Durant labeled the revamped roster dangerous, a word that lands with some weight coming from a player who has seen plenty of high-level teams up close, and he also pointed to the kind of energy Philadelphia fans bring whenever a big move changes the picture.

Durant said he expects Browns fresh start to fit well in Philly and suggested the citys fan base will embrace him quickly. He also touched on another major league storyline when asked about LeBron James free agency, saying he had no clue where James would land while still acknowledging that James will keep producing at a high level wherever he ends up. Joel Embiid Just Added To Philadelphias Championship Pressure

Joel Embiid spent part of the summer taking in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park, where the league's brightest baseball stars played in front of a Philadelphia crowd and the American League left with a 4-0 win. For a city that treats its biggest names like civic property, Embiid being shown in the stands was another reminder of how much attention still follows him wherever he goes, even when the calendar has turned away from basketball.

The bigger picture for the 76ers is the pressure that comes with that spotlight. Philadelphia has watched its other teams take turns in the postseason conversation, and now the focus shifts back to Embiid and a roster that has been reshaped around him and Tyrese Maxey, with Jaylen Brown arriving as the kind of high-end addition that changes expectations immediately. Brown also comes in with plenty of recent credibility after finishing sixth in MVP voting, which only raises the stakes for what the Sixers are supposed to be next. [Read more 🡒]
