Sixers Land A Philly Crossover Fans Will Love

Top Philadelphia athletes make a comedic guest appearance in the latest Abbott Elementary, sparking a playful confrontation.

Three 76ers showed up in the Season 6 premiere of Abbott Elementary, giving the Philadelphia sitcom another sports cameo in its latest cold open.

The episode opened with Jacob Hill, the history teacher at the fictional school, noticing that the Eagles provide a free playground for one local school every year. When he saw the Birds had already chosen a different school, he fired off a semi-threatening Instagram post asking the Sixers to build one at Abbott Elementary.

That set up a funny bit where a group of men in Sixers jerseys fooled him into thinking they were Dean Wade, Labaron Philon Jr. and other bench players. Then Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe arrived to help.

Jacob still wasn’t convinced and challenged them with a question.

“If you’re the Sixers, then where’s LeBron James?”

“This is going to sound like a lie, but he’s actually running up the Rocky steps right now,” Maxey said.

“He loves that movie,” Brown said.

Jacob didn’t bite.

“Yeah, right. Get the hell out of here you tall jerks,” he said.

As the three walked away, Jacob summed up the whole exchange with one blunt realization: “I really got to start watching men’s sports.”

Abbott Elementary creator, executive producer and co-writer Quinta Brunson, who also plays Janine Teagues, posted a photo with Maxey, Brown and Edgecombe on Instagram. Maxey responded with a goat emoji.

The cameo fits a pattern for the show, which has already featured Jalen Hurts, Brandon Graham, Jason Kelce and DeVonta Smith. Gritty also appeared in the Season 2 premiere.

Justin Edwards Already Has A 76ers Roster Battle To Win

The 76ers summer roster shuffle has already created a small but meaningful preseason competition, and Justin Edwards may be right in the middle of it. Philadelphia added two-way wing Rayan Rupert, a fourth-year player whose athleticism and defensive upside could make him a different kind of fit on a team still sorting through how it wants to play this season. For a roster trying to find useful, complementary minutes anywhere it can, the battle for wing reps is suddenly worth watching.

Edwards enters camp with a simpler calling card as a spot-up shooter, but that alone may not be enough if the Sixers lean harder into size, activity and defensive versatility on the perimeter. Ruperts profile gives him a clear chance to push for preseason playing time, and how the teams evolving style takes shape could decide whether Edwards stays in a more consistent role or gets squeezed by the new competition. In a camp full of open questions, this is one of the quieter ones that could still matter. [Read more 🡒]

Nick Nurse Pushes Back On Joel Embiid Report Drawing Attention

A stray report about Joel Embiid found its way into the spotlight this week, and Nick Nurse made it clear he did not put much stock in it. The story, circulated by New York Knicks announcer Mike Breen, claimed LeBron James reprimanded Embiid for being late to practice, but James quickly denied the incident and Breen later apologized and retracted the account.

For the 76ers, the bigger takeaway was Nurses reaction to the noise around his star center. He defended Embiid and said he was surprised the report had even surfaced, a small reminder of how quickly an unverified story can follow Philadelphias most important player and create an unnecessary distraction around the team. LeBron Could Be Headed For A Role Sixers Fans Never Expected

LeBron James arrived in Philadelphia this summer after eight seasons with the Lakers, and the early conversation around his fit has already gone beyond the usual star-usage chatter. With injuries and roster needs shaping the way the Sixers will have to piece things together, head coach Nick Nurse said James is expected to handle multiple positions as the team figures out how to use his size and versatility.

Nurse also pointed to James conditioning and work ethic during the offseason, which only adds to the intrigue around how much responsibility he may be asked to carry. For Sixers fans, the bigger surprise is not that James can adapt, but that the adjustment could include stretches at center, a role few would have imagined when he first put on a Philadelphia uniform.
