Jaylen Brown is now officially eligible to work out a one-year contract extension with the Sixers.
That window opened at midnight on Sunday, and while Brown is already locked in for three more seasons at roughly $185 million, Philadelphia can now add another year to the deal. The catch is that the value of that extra season won’t be finalized until the NBA sets the salary cap for the 2029-30 season. If the number lands where it’s currently projected, a max one-year extension could come in at around $69 million, or even more if the cap climbs higher than expected.
For the Sixers, there’s no obvious reason to rush. That kind of money carries real risk, and it helps explain why Brown could be had at what many viewed as a relatively modest price: Philadelphia was willing to take on the size of his contract. After his trade bonus was applied, the deal looked like this:
If Brown and the Sixers don’t reach an extension this offseason, he would still have another path available next summer. As a five-time All-Star, he’d be eligible then to sign a three-year extension instead.
Brown, who finished sixth in last year’s NBA MVP voting, spent 10 seasons with the Boston Celtics before Philadelphia landed him in a trade that sent Paul George, two first-round picks - one with complicated conditions that could become a swap - and two second-round picks to Boston.
There’s also a neat bit of irony in how this all played out. Brown has played more games against the Sixers than any other team in his NBA career, and now Philadelphia is the franchise that ended his Celtics run. The Sixers did it twice, really: first by trading for the 2024 NBA Finals MVP in July, and then by knocking Boston out in the first round of last year’s playoffs, a result that helped trigger major changes in Boston.
