The Sixers turned their home opener into a wild, messy, unforgettable night Thursday at Xfinity Mobile Arena, digging out of a 29-point hole and beating the Cavaliers 114-106.
It was not a clean path to a 2-0 start. For long stretches, Cleveland had the building quiet and the game under control. Then Philadelphia ripped the script apart, leaning on Tyrese Maxey’s 32 points and six assists, Joel Embiid’s 24 points, and big contributions from LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to complete one of the most dramatic swings you’ll see in an opener.
Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 32 points.
The Sixers also had a full injury report to work around, with Dean Wade (left ankle sprain), Dominick Barlow (lower back stress reaction), Anfernee Simons (right Achilles tendon tear) and Tacko Fall (left quadriceps strain) sidelined.
James got Philadelphia on the board first with a catch-and-shoot three, and he later set up VJ Edgecombe for a backdoor layup. But that was about the extent of the early comfort for the Sixers.
The opening minutes were a turnover mess, with six giveaways in the first six minutes and James responsible for three of them. The shot selection wasn’t much better.
Philadelphia kept missing from deep, just as it had in Tuesday’s win over the Knicks, and opened 2 for 13 from beyond the arc.
Even the whistles didn’t help. A team loaded with size and talent did not attempt a free throw until 6:43 remained in the second quarter.
By then, the damage was already piling up. Mitchell beat the buzzer with a three, and Cleveland took a 35-18 lead after one.
The second quarter got worse before it got better. Philadelphia reached double-digit turnovers by the first minute of the period, and Cleveland scored the game’s first 17 points off turnovers while stretching the margin to as many as 29.
The same nine-man rotation stayed in place, with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Anfernee Simons, Adem Bona and Jabari Walker all coming off the bench, but nobody found a groove. Bona’s first stretch included a giveaway when Mario Hezonja stripped him on a dribble handoff and turned it into a fast-break slam.
Defensively, the Sixers were just as shaky as they had been against New York - maybe worse. Cleveland got easy looks, the rotations were late, and Mitchell had 22 points in the first half on 7-for-9 shooting. The Cavs never seemed to have to work very hard for anything they got.
Then the game flipped.
Philadelphia stormed back with a 16-0 run that bridged the end of the second quarter and the start of the third. Edgecombe, James and Embiid all finished layups during the surge, and the energy in the arena changed in a hurry.
The Sixers were more forceful with the ball, more active defensively and suddenly much more dangerous in transition. Brown scored a fast-break layup after an Edgecombe steal, Maxey sliced through the defense for another basket, then buried a three that forced Cleveland into a timeout.
The comeback kept building from there. Maxey’s layup pulled Philadelphia within 84-82, and even after a Cleveland response to end the third quarter with a 90-82 lead, the Sixers kept coming. Embiid tied it for the first time in forever with a mid-range jumper that made it 96-95, and Brown took over from there, attacking Sam Merrill in isolation and scoring three straight baskets to push the lead to 102-95.
From there, Cleveland had no answer.
For the Sixers, the night ended as a reminder of both sides of this team: the sloppy stretches that can bury them, and the top-end firepower that can erase almost anything when it all clicks. They get the Bucks on Saturday and the Pistons on Sunday in a home back-to-back, and if Thursday proved anything, it’s that this group can flip a game in a hurry.

Sixers Home Opener Just Put VJ Edgecombe And LeBron To The Test
The Sixers home opener against Cleveland carried the usual early-season buzz, but one of the nights most memorable moments came in the third quarter when VJ Edgecombe ran into LeBron James and came away with a bloody nose. Edgecombe stayed on the floor, and the game kept its edge as Philadelphia tried to settle in at home against a Cavaliers team that brought plenty of star power with it.
By the fourth quarter, the margin was still tight, with Philadelphia holding a slim lead as both James and Edgecombe had already made their presence felt. It was the kind of opener that felt physical from the start, and for the Sixers it also served as an early test of how their young pieces handle a matchup that can turn chippy in a hurry. LeBron And The Sixers Just Reopened A Painful Cavaliers What-If
A painful old thread resurfaced Tuesday night in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers watched a 29-point lead vanish in a 114-106 loss to the 76ers. Tyrese Maxey powered Philadelphia with 32 points, while LeBron James finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, another reminder of how quickly a game can swing when the margins tighten and a familiar star is on the floor.
Kenny Atkinsons offseason disappointment over missing out on LeBron adds another layer to the result for a Cavaliers team still chasing the kind of stability and star power that can prevent collapses like this one. For the Sixers, it was a useful road win and a sharp response after trailing big, but for Cleveland it also reopened a familiar what-if that never seems to go away. [Read more 🡒]
LeBron Just Revealed How Close The Sixers Came To Losing Him
LeBron James added a little more context to one of the offseasons biggest moves, saying he sat down with the Cavaliers front office as he weighed his options before ultimately landing with the 76ers on a two-year deal. Clevelands championship hopes were part of what made the conversation worthwhile, which underscores just how wide open his decision really was before Philadelphia secured him.
For the 76ers, the revelation is another reminder that their summer swing came with real competition and real risk. James has already started paying it off on the floor, helping Philadelphia rally for a comeback win over Cleveland, and the early returns suggest the Sixers were as close to losing him as they were to landing a major piece for their push forward.
