Sixers Frontcourt Battle Just Got Murkier Before The Season Opens

With the 76ers' preseason winding down, Dominick Barlow's untimely injury leaves his role uncertain as he battles to secure a spot amidst a flurry of setbacks.

Dominick Barlow’s push for a preseason role with the Philadelphia 76ers is running out of time, and now a back issue is adding another layer of frustration.

Barlow still hasn’t gotten onto the practice court, and according to PHLY’s Derek Bodner, he is dealing with back soreness that has kept him limited for most of camp. He has not played in a preseason game yet, and with the finale coming up, there’s a real chance he enters the regular season without a single preseason rep.

That matters because the center competition has already been squeezed by injuries, forcing Nick Nurse to think about small-ball options. Barlow was supposed to get a chance to make his case in that mix, but the opportunity has been swallowed up by recovery time instead.

He’s not the only one caught in the chaos. Adem Bona missed the start of camp because of a foot injury and still hasn’t appeared in the preseason.

He remains a partial participant with the finale only days away. Ariel Hukporti began camp healthy, then suffered a devastating Achilles injury in the Sixers’ first preseason game against the New York Knicks.

Tacko Fall, one of the non-guaranteed signees, is also out with a hip injury.

If Hukporti took the biggest blow, Barlow is the clear runner-up. The chance to show he could help as a small-ball five was sitting there, but instead he’s trying to heal while players like Jabari Walker and Adem Bona fight for those minutes.

There is at least some existing evidence of what Barlow can do at power forward. He appeared in 71 games for the 76ers last year and made 59 starts. In 23.8 minutes per game, he shot 53.9% from the field and averaged 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

That production was enough to keep him in the conversation. But with the preseason nearly finished and his health still in the way, the climb to a role has gotten steeper.

LeBron Is Already Changing Something Big Inside The Sixers

LeBron James has already started leaving a mark inside the 76ers locker room, and for Jabari Walker, the biggest surprise has been how quickly that presence has translated into everyday leadership. After Philadelphias 2026 offseason additions, Walker described James as more than just another big name in the room, pointing to the way he carries himself and the respect he draws from teammates.

Walkers takeaway was simple: James has a different kind of influence. He has played alongside elite stars before, but this one stands out for the way it changes the tone around the team and gives Philadelphia a new voice as it tries to build something meaningful. The full effect of that dynamic is still unfolding, but it is already hard to miss inside the organization. [Read more 🡒]

Labaron Philon Jr. Is Giving The Sixers A Reason To Believe

Labaron Philon Jr. has spent the preseason doing exactly what a young guard is supposed to do when a team is looking for answers: make the ball move, keep the offense organized and show he belongs. The rookie has flashed real playmaking upside, and his recent work included a strong outing with 14 points and 7 assists in 25 minutes, the kind of line that catches attention even in October. For Philadelphia, that matters because the backcourt has been searching for someone who can help steady the second unit and ease some of the creation load that falls so heavily on Tyrese Maxey.

Philons path to minutes was never supposed to be this direct, but the Sixers do not have many natural floor generals on the roster, and that reality can accelerate a players timeline fast. Drafted 22nd overall, he is already making a case that his feel for the game can translate sooner than expected, giving the coaching staff something it badly needs: a reserve option who can bring a little tactical stability when the starters sit. The bigger question now is whether that preseason promise holds once the games start counting for real. [Read more 🡒]

Sixers Still Have A Preseason Availability Problem Before The Games Count

Nick Nurse is still sorting through the 76ers preseason availability picture with the regular season drawing near, and the list has not thinned as much as the team would like. Dominick Barlow remains sidelined with back soreness, and Nurse said there is still no timeline for his return, leaving another frontcourt body in limbo as Philadelphia tries to get everyone aligned before the games start counting.

There was at least a little movement on Wednesday, with Anfernee Simons and Adem Bona taking part in practice in a limited way. Their status for the final preseason game against Boston is still up in the air, but any step forward matters for a group that has been navigating a crowded injury report and a few moving parts across the organization, including new front-office hires for the Delaware Blue Coats.
