The Cleveland Cavaliers may have added Mario Hezonja, but they’re not done chasing wing help.
Even after Sunday’s signing, Cleveland is still being linked to Jonathan Kuminga, with the Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers emerging as the two teams most seriously in the mix for the NBA champion. The catch is simple: money and mechanics. Kuminga is said to be looking for a deal that tops $20 million per year, and the path to getting him appears to run through a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks.
“Jonathan Kuminga is demanding a salary in free agency exceeding $20 million annually, per The Athletic. Kuminga prefers a sign-and-trade from the Hawks over leaving outright, simply due to the added financial implications. The Cavaliers and Lakers are the finalists for Kuminga,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.
Cleveland’s move for Hezonja did not shut the door on Kuminga, at least not according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. He said the Cavaliers are still alive in the chase and that Kuminga’s camp sees the fit.
“The Cavs are still in the game for Jonathan Kuminga. I've talked to his agent.
He does see a really good fit in Cleveland. I listen to the pathways the Cavs have to get him and I don't think they're realistic.
That said, if you'd told me seven weeks ago that the 76ers would have Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, I would have not thought that was realistic,” Windhorst said.
The Hawks’ roster situation makes the whole thing tricky, since they are already over the roster limit. That leaves sign-and-trade as the most likely route if Kuminga is going to wind up in Cleveland or Los Angeles.
For now, the Cavaliers have already addressed the wing spot by bringing in Hezonja. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the deal as a one-year, $2.8 million contract, noting that the former No. 5 pick in the 2015 draft is getting a chance to restart his NBA career after last playing in 2019-20.
“EuroLeague star Mario Hezonja has agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, agent Michael Tellem of Excel Sports Management told ESPN. Hezonja -- the No. 5 pick in the 2015 draft -- receives an opportunity to revitalize his NBA career entering his sixth season in the league after last playing in 2019-20. He is set to play a key wing role for the Eastern Conference finalists,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
Still, Cleveland appears to believe there’s room to keep pushing for Kuminga. The Lakers have been in the hunt for more than a month, but the Cavaliers continue to see themselves as a real contender if the numbers and the trade path line up.
