Sixers Could Have A New East Threat If Toronto Pulls This Off

As the potential Kawhi Leonard trade looms, the Toronto Raptors are poised to transform into formidable contenders, reshaping the landscape of the Eastern Conference competition.

The Toronto Raptors may have pulled off the kind of offseason move that changes the shape of the Eastern Conference - if it actually gets across the finish line.

Toronto agreed to send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and significant draft compensation to Los Angeles for franchise icon Kawhi Leonard, but the deal has not been officially announced. The holdup stems from the NBA’s ongoing salary-cap circumvention investigation involving Leonard and the Clippers, and the league has made it clear that if Leonard is penalized, Toronto would have to absorb the fallout as well.

For now, the trade sits in limbo, and that leaves both teams stuck in place for the rest of the offseason. The expectation remains that it will eventually get done before the season starts, but as of now it is still only a proposed deal.

If it does go through, Toronto’s summer takes on a very different look. Swapping Ingram for Leonard would be a major upgrade, especially with Leonard bringing a much stronger offensive punch to go alongside Scottie Barnes.

The Raptors would also be replacing Dick with first-round pick Allen Graves, while losing a valuable bench big in Sandro Mamukelashvili. On paper, that version of Toronto looks like a very good team.

If the move falls apart, though, the outlook changes fast. Toronto would slide from the group of possible conference heavyweights into a team that could get buried by them.

The Raptors already had strong defensive pieces before adding Graves in the draft, and Leonard would give them a clear boost on that end even if he no longer has to carry the toughest assignments every night. Toronto also has a hole behind center, but it does have options. Barnes has spent plenty of time there before, and Collin Murray-Boyles handled the role well as a rookie.

The roster still feels a little light on players who are locked-in rotation pieces, but Graves could change that sooner than expected. And if Toronto really wants to have some fun, there’s a version of this team that can unleash a lineup of Shead, Graves, Leonard, Barnes and Murray-Boyles. That group would be loaded with defensive talent and built to make life miserable for opponents.

For the Sixers, Leonard’s name will never really fade into the background. None of Toronto’s current players have suited up in Philadelphia, but Leonard remains forever connected to the Sixers because of his Game 7 buzzer-beater in the second round of the 2019 NBA Playoffs.

More than seven years have passed since that shot, and the Sixers have gone through a long list of different versions since then, with plenty of different co-stars for Joel Embiid. Still, none of those teams ever got as close to a championship as the group that watched Leonard’s shot bounce on the rim four times.

Sixers Just Made A Staff Move That Could Matter Fast

A familiar name is on the way back into Nick Nurses orbit. Phil Handy is reportedly finalizing a deal to join the 76ers coaching staff, bringing a rsum that includes previous work alongside Nurse in Toronto, plus stops with the Cavaliers and Lakers. For a Philadelphia team trying to keep tightening its edges on the bench, this is the kind of move that can matter quickly because it adds a voice Nurse already knows and trusts.

Handy had already joined the Mavericks for the 2025-2026 NBA season before this development, which makes the shift notable even beyond the usual coaching carousel. For the Sixers, the appeal is clear: experience, familiarity with Nurses style and another veteran presence in a room where every detail can carry weight. [Read more 🡒]

Sixers Could Target An Intriguing Bucks Guard As Depth Questions Loom

The Sixers still have an open roster spot, and the front office appears likely to keep exploring both the trade and buyout markets as it looks for another piece. Center depth remains a concern, but there is also some room to evaluate the guard rotation, especially if the team wants more insulation behind its current options and a clearer answer on how the younger pieces are coming along.

One name now in the mix is Milwaukee guard Kevin Porter Jr., who has reportedly drawn interest from Philadelphia as the Bucks head into a rebuild phase after Giannis Antetokounmpo's departure. For the Sixers, that kind of availability can be appealing at this stage of the offseason, even if any pursuit will likely depend on how the market develops and whether the team decides the backcourt or the front line needs the stronger immediate fix. Sixers New Big Three Just Sent An Early Message

The early days of a new star pairing can tell you a lot, and the Sixers already have one sign that their revamped core is taking shape. Tyrese Maxey, LeBron James and Jaylen Brown recently shared a joint practice session, giving Philadelphia a first look at how the pieces might fit together on the floor. Maxey came away encouraged by the chemistry and work ethic he saw, while James made it clear he has quickly taken to the guards approach and the bond they have started to build.

For a team trying to turn a headline-grabbing overhaul into something workable, those kinds of first impressions matter. James praise of Maxey also adds another layer to why this partnership feels different, with the veteran pointing to Maxeys dedication as part of what helped bring him to Philadelphia in the first place. The talent is obvious, but the more interesting question now is how fast that comfort turns into something the Sixers can rely on when the games start counting. [Read more 🡒]
