Kevin Love wants another shot at running it back with LeBron James, and the Philadelphia 76ers are the team at the center of the conversation.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Love’s agent, Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, has already been in touch with the Sixers’ front office since James joined them. The idea is straightforward: Love is interested in chasing another championship alongside LeBron, and Philadelphia is the landing spot being discussed.
There’s a familiar pull here. Love and LeBron stayed close after their four seasons together with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they were both part of the Cavaliers’ 2016 championship reunion tour this summer. Love reportedly wants another ring, and a reunion with James would give him that chance.
The problem is finding a place for him.
Philadelphia does not currently have an open roster spot. The Sixers used their final slot to add Kentavious Caldwell-Pope after his buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies, so bringing in Love would require waiving or trading someone first.
Even if a spot opened, the fit isn’t a clean one on paper. The Sixers already have Joel Embiid at center, along with 23-year-old Adam Bona and 24-year-old Ariel Hukporti for additional frontcourt depth. Love would bring a different skill set, though, thanks to his shooting and long track record.
Last season, Love averaged 6.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 39.7% from the field and 37.3% from three-point range. At 38, he’s far removed from his All-Star peak, but he can still space the floor and give a team veteran leadership in a smaller role.
That’s part of what makes the idea appealing. LeBron James and Kevin Love spent 2014 to 2018 together in Cleveland, reached four straight Finals, and won it all in 2016 when the Cavaliers erased a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors.
The report also pointed out that the Sixers have already built a roster around LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. In that setup, Love wouldn’t be asked to start or carry a major bench load. His value would come in spot shooting, rebounding, and the kind of steady voice teams lean on during a run.
Still, nothing is close to done. Love also has a strong relationship with Jazz coach Will Hardy, and he was an important veteran presence in Utah. The Jazz, however, are full right now.
For Philadelphia, it all hinges on whether a roster opening eventually appears. Love’s interest is already on the table, and if another move creates space before training camp, the possibility of LeBron and Love teaming up again starts to feel a lot more real.
