Vucevic returned to the Magic this offseason on a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal, and on paper it looked like one of the smarter low-cost pickups around the league. But a reunion does not guarantee him a steady role. Orlando already has other options at the position, and as the season wears on, his limitations could make him easier to squeeze out of the rotation.
That possibility is exactly why Philadelphia should be interested.
The Sixers have more names to consider for the backup big-man job this time around, but none of them bring the kind of post scoring Vucevic can still offer. That matters for a second unit that could use more variety. Embiid is still expected to miss games by design even when healthy, so there will be minutes available behind him, and a scoring center gives that group a different look.
Vucevic has spent years as one of the league’s better players with his back to the basket. In his latest stint with the Celtics, he was pushed into more of a floor-spacing role, but the 76ers could ask for both versions if they land him. With this roster, there’s room to use him in a more flexible way.
Orlando’s center hierarchy also points in the same direction. Wendell Carter Jr. is set to start, with Goga Bitadze lined up as the primary backup.
Vucevic could open the year as Carter’s top reserve, but Bitadze’s fit is cleaner because he brings high-level interior defense and strong court sense. That setup creates a real chance that the two-time All-Star becomes a trade name before the deadline.
If that door opens, Philadelphia should be ready to step through it. Vucevic wouldn’t cost much to acquire, and a return to the franchise that drafted him would be appealing for a veteran who is still chasing a title. Just as important, there may actually be a meaningful role waiting for him in Philly.
