The Sixers are giving Charles Bassey another shot, signing the 25-year-old center to a second 10-day contract, according to the NBA’s official transaction log.
This marks Bassey’s second short-term stint with Philly this season, though he’s yet to log any game action in a Sixers uniform. Originally drafted by the team in the second round back in 2021, Bassey is back where his NBA journey began - and he’s hoping to make the most of this opportunity.
If you’ve been following Bassey’s path, you know he’s been putting in work. He’s been a force in the G League with Santa Cruz, averaging 19 points and 11 boards per game. That kind of production doesn’t go unnoticed, especially for a team like the Sixers, who are dealing with some roster fluidity and could use an extra big body in the frontcourt.
Bassey’s journey this season has already taken him through multiple organizations. After showing out in Summer League with Boston, he landed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Hawks in September.
That opportunity didn’t stick - Atlanta waived him before the season tipped off - but he quickly found a short-term home in Memphis on a 10-day hardship contract. He appeared in two games for the Grizzlies before that deal expired.
Now, he’s back in Philly, where it all started. While he hasn’t cracked the rotation yet, this second 10-day contract gives both Bassey and the Sixers a little more time to see if there’s a fit. For a team navigating injuries and lineup uncertainty, having a 6'11" rebounder with a high motor and recent G League dominance in their back pocket isn’t a bad option.
Whether he gets minutes or not, Bassey’s return is a reminder that in the NBA, persistence matters - and sometimes, the second time around is when the opportunity finally sticks.
