The Philadelphia 76ers had one big question hanging over Daryl Morey’s exit: could they keep drafting well without him?
That concern is already looking a little smaller after Mike Gansey’s first major test as president of basketball operations. With the 2026 NBA Draft behind him and Summer League nearing its end, the early signs from Philadelphia’s rookie class have been strong enough to earn notice around the league.
Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz graded every team’s rookies so far, and the Sixers came away with an “A-“ after Labaron Philon Jr. kept flashing in Las Vegas.
Swartz said the Sixers “may have struck gold.” The one area he pointed to as a concern was Philon’s finishing around the rim.
“Finishing inside is his only real weak spot to this point, as the former Alabama star is shooting just 34.6 percent from inside the arc during summer league,” Swartz explained.
Even with that blemish, Philon’s production has been loud. At the time of the grades, he was averaging 21.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.0 steals while hitting 40.0% of his shots from beyond the arc.
He followed that up in the fourth outing against the Orlando Magic with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
For a rookie first-rounder taken well outside the lottery, that’s exactly the kind of Summer League showing that gets attention. Philon has been one of the brightest performers in Las Vegas, and that matters for a Sixers team that has leaned on draft success under Morey.
The bigger picture is encouraging too. Since 2020, Philadelphia has selected and kept five first-round picks, including Philon. Tyrese Maxey came out of that same range and has grown into a two-time All-Star who still has more on his plate as the Sixers keep building around him.
Jaden Springer arrived as a late first-round pick in 2021, with the understanding that he would need time. Philadelphia eventually moved on from him before the end of his rookie deal.
Jared McCain, meanwhile, was a mid-round pick who has already put together a strong two-season run despite injuries. The Sixers traded him away during the 2025-2026 season to get the pick that became Philon.
And in 2025, Philadelphia’s tanking paid off with the No. 3 pick, which brought in Baylor star VJ Edgecombe. After stepping into a full-time starting role in his first season, Edgecombe has .
For now, Philon is the latest young piece carrying the load for Philadelphia’s draft reputation. The early returns suggest Gansey’s first big swing is off to a solid start.

NBA Legend Just Went All In On The 76ers Again
Tracy McGrady has become one of the more bullish voices around the 76ers again, and his case starts with the part of the roster that still gives Philadelphia real hope. He sees enough offensive punch and defensive upside in the group to believe the ceiling is much higher than most outside observers are willing to grant, which is why the conversation around this team keeps circling back to Joel Embiid and what he can still mean when he is available.
Embiids recent run has only sharpened the debate. His 2025-2026 season and playoff stretch were interrupted by injury issues, even as Philadelphia found moments that suggested a deeper postseason push was possible, including the comeback over Boston before the later sweep. For the 76ers, the talent is not really in question, but the larger question hanging over every big-picture projection is whether Embiid can stay on the floor long enough for those ideas to turn into something more than optimism. Joel Embiid Trade Idea Just Put The Sixers On The Spot
A fresh trade concept has put Joel Embiid back at the center of league chatter, and this one reaches well beyond the usual one-team rumor mill. The framework would send Embiid to Dallas in a three-team setup that also pulls Milwaukee into the mix, with the Mavericks and Bucks each getting pieces that fit their own needs while Philadelphia is left to weigh whether any blockbuster involving its franchise center could ever be worth entertaining.
For now, the Sixers still look far more likely to keep Embiid than move him, especially after reshaping the roster around Jaylen Brown. Even so, the mere fact that a deal of this size is being floated says plenty about how aggressively rival front offices are thinking, and why Philadelphia will keep finding itself at the center of these conversations as long as Embiid remains one of the leagues biggest names. Sixers Fans Wont Like Where This Franchise Cornerstone Rumor Is Going
Joel Embiids standing in Philadelphia is once again part of the conversation, and it is the kind of talk that naturally gets louder when a franchise cornerstone has spent so much time under a health cloud. Even with all the uncertainty, there is still a reminder baked into the discussion: when Embiid is available, his impact is not something the 76ers can casually replace with a single move.
What makes the chatter more uneasy is the sense that any real path forward would have to be about more than basketball fit alone, because the price of moving on from a player of Embiids caliber would reshape the roster in a major way. For now, it remains speculation rather than a confirmed decision, but the fact that the topic is even circulating says plenty about where the pressure points are for Philadelphia. [Read more 🡒]
