The 76ers did not just chase names when free agency opened. They knew the bench needed help, too, and the early returns have been exactly the kind of buy-in every contender hopes for.
Philadelphia brought in guard Anfernee Simons in the first few days of free agency after his split season with the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls. A few weeks later, the Sixers added veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Both players have plenty of starting experience, and neither would look out of place in a first unit. Simons has started 218 of his 444 games.
Caldwell-Pope has 784 starts in 963 games.
But heading into the 2026-2027 NBA season, both made the same point in their own way: they are ready to come off the bench.
Simons leaned into the idea of confidence, even while acknowledging the role change. On Cousins with Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter, he said, “Obviously you got the ultimate like that confidence in yourself that you feel like you’re a starter," Simons said on Cousins with Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter.
"You know, obviously the role is different. You know, you might be coming off the bench, but my mindset going into the game is I’ve already competed at a high level with starters, and it’s going to be just even easier for me when I come into the game, you know what I mean? Playing against second units.”
Simons spent seven seasons with the Blazers and started in more than half of his appearances there. He averaged 15.0 points and 3.3 assists during that stretch. His time with Boston and Chicago brought a different assignment, and he still produced 14.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while working with the Celtics’ second unit.
Caldwell-Pope took the role acceptance a step further. The two-time NBA champion said he is not only fine with coming off the bench, he wants the hardware that can come with it.
“I ain’t got to start. I want to be Sixth Man of the Year anyway," Caldwell-Pope said on The Dawg Talk podcast.
“For me, it’s not personal. I’m coming in to give my team 110%.
You know KCP-I’m going to do that-each and every night I’m going to be available. Let the young fella [VJ Edgecombe] start.
I want to be Sixth Man."
For Philadelphia, that is the kind of answer that matters. With stars already in place, the challenge is making sure the rest of the roster fits around them without friction. So far, the Sixers are hearing all the right things from two key reserves, and that makes their summer look a lot stronger.
