Joel Embiid’s 2026-27 season is already drawing a bold prediction, and it comes from one of the biggest voices in the sport. Shaquille O’Neal thinks the Philadelphia 76ers star is about to reclaim his spot at the top of the center hierarchy.
That’s a notable call considering how much has changed around Embiid in Philadelphia. The Sixers entered the 2026 offseason with a solid core, with Tyrese Maxey still beside him and VJ Edgecombe coming off a promising rookie year. But the roster around them has been reshaped in a major way, with Jaylen Brown, an All-NBA Second Team selection from the previous season, now in the mix and LeBron James also joining the team.
Those additions could alter the way Philly functions, and O’Neal believes they may help Embiid get back to his best form.

For years, Embiid’s main rival in the center conversation was Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. That debate has shifted some as Embiid has dealt with injuries, Jokic has gotten older, and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has entered the discussion as one of the league’s top centers.
Embiid has still shown plenty of high-end production over the last three seasons since winning the 2023 regular season MVP. In that award-winning campaign, he put up 33.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. A season like that would put him back in the MVP mix, though that path looks tougher now with Philadelphia expected to spread the ball among several star-level players.
The biggest question, as always, is health. Embiid has not played more than 39 games in a season since that MVP year in 2022-23, and that reality makes any projection a tricky one.
If he enters 2026-27 fully healthy, O’Neal’s prediction has a real chance to land. If not, the center race figures to stay where it has been, with Jokic and Wembanyama at the front.
