LeBron James’ free agency ended with a choice between two familiar powers, and according to Rich Paul, the real battle was never as messy as the rumors made it sound.
Paul said the decision narrowed to the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers, with James ultimately landing in Philly after what he described as a complicated process. He pushed back on the noise that followed the offseason chatter.
“This is why I said all that stuff was false, all the speculation,” Paul said. “And at the end of the day these guys are just doing their job. It was a layered decision across the board between Philly and Golden State and he just really decided on Philly.”
That puts a sharper frame on one of the biggest moves of the NBA offseason. Golden State was seen as a real threat to land the four-time NBA champion, but Philadelphia’s pitch won out in the end.
Paul also pointed to something that goes beyond scoring, passing or any box-score line James brings with him. In his view, the veteran’s presence gives Nick Nurse another voice in the room and another layer of control in the locker room.
“Adding LeBron with his experience, Nick Nurse has a guy that he can let police the team so the guys don’t turn on Nick,” Paul explained.
James arrives in Philadelphia with a resume that already sits among the best in league history: four NBA championships, four MVP awards and more than 20 years in the league. His game has always been about more than points. Teammates and coaches have long leaned on his basketball IQ and his ability to set a standard.
Now the Sixers are banking on that same edge to fit alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and an upgraded supporting cast. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is among the veterans in the mix, as Philadelphia builds around players who know what championship-level basketball demands.
And while the what-ifs around Stephen Curry and the Warriors will linger, Paul’s comments make one thing plain: Philadelphia won the recruiting fight. The pressure that comes with that kind of addition is part of the deal now, and the expectations in Philly are going to be enormous.
