The Philadelphia 76ers are navigating a rocky season despite having a formidable trio of stars-Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. The team's struggle for consistency has been evident, as they’ve slipped in the NBA Power Rankings.
The latest setback came with news about Maxey’s health. NBA insider Shams Charania revealed that the All-Star guard has a tendon injury in his right pinkie finger, sidelining him for at least three weeks.
Maxey's injury couldn't come at a worse time. The Sixers have lost nine of their last 14 games, and a series of unfortunate events have added to their woes.
Paul George is serving a 25-game suspension, and Joel Embiid is out with a right oblique strain. With Maxey sidelined, the Sixers lose a crucial playmaker, adding to their challenges.
However, there’s a silver lining with rookie guard VJ Edgecombe making a strong return. After missing three games with a lumbar contusion, Edgecombe shone against the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 23 points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out five assists, and snagging three steals. His perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line was instrumental in breaking the Sixers' two-game losing streak with a 139-129 victory.
With the Big Three unavailable, Edgecombe's role is set to expand significantly. The Sixers will look to him for leadership and production as they prepare to face the Detroit Pistons on Friday.
