Paul George Just Gave Sixers Fans Mixed Feelings After Celtics Debut

As Paul George makes his debut with the Celtics, he fondly reflects on the strong bonds with his former 76ers teammates, revealing that basketball connections endure beyond trades and team lines.

Paul George’s first preseason game against the 76ers brought a familiar mix of old faces, old bonds and a lopsided result at TD Garden.

The Celtics rolled to a 144-106 win over Philadelphia, with George making his unofficial Boston debut and finishing with 13 points, five steals and five rebounds. The Sixers were without LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Anfernee Simons, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jaylen Brown, who did not play despite going through his pregame workout.

Afterward, George spent his time talking about the people he left behind in Philadelphia as much as the game itself. He made clear that the relationship with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe is still very much intact.

“I love those guys,” George said. “Jo, Tyrese, VJ, JE.

I think these long-lasting relationships that you build along the way of this journey here. VJ calls me almost every other week.

I talk to him. Tyrese has called me a lot of times throughout the summer.

I'll go back to Philly to see my family. Jo lives about five-ten minutes from me.

So, I see him. Our kids are in the same schools.

So, we see each other. So, there's still a brotherhood over there, so it was great to see those guys and now compete against them.”

Edgecombe led the Sixers with 19 points, while Jabari Walker added 14 points and six rebounds. Labaron Philon Jr. chipped in 14 points and seven assists off the bench. For Boston, Payton Pritchard led the way with 25 points off the bench, and Jayson Tatum finished with 23 points, four threes, five rebounds, four assists and one steal.

George also spoke specifically about Edgecombe, recalling the time he spent with the rookie guard last season and the relationship they formed.

“I spent a ton of time with VJ, and hopefully, it's just an impact if I help him in any way become a better basketball player, a better person. I love the kid,” George said. “We spent a ton of time together, and if it's anything that he took away from it is I guess just being genuine, truly, and be there for him in any way I could, and I thought I tried to give it everything I had when I could, and be available when I could for those guys.”

The teams will meet again on Friday, when the Sixers host the Celtics in their preseason finale.

Jaylen Browns Boston Return Already Feels Awkward For The 76ers

Jaylen Browns first return to Boston in a 76ers uniform already has the feel of a strange subplot, even before the regular season gives it real weight. The Celtics traded Brown to Philadelphia in the offseason, and when the teams met in the 76ers third preseason game, he was not on the floor for the matchup that naturally drew extra attention.

Brown also kept a low profile around the building, while a viral pregame post added to the awkwardness by showing him and former teammate Jayson Tatum seemingly steering clear of each other during warmups. The 76ers will see Boston again later in the season, which means this uneasy reunion is likely just getting started. [Read more 🡒]

Joel Embiid Is Facing A New 76ers Problem Already

Joel Embiid is already dealing with the kind of noise that tends to follow a star player into a new season, and it showed up during a preseason game when a report tied him to an awkward sideline moment with LeBron James. The backdrop matters here: with LeBron and Jaylen Brown now on the 76ers, every small interaction around the team is going to be watched a little more closely, and Embiid is again at the center of that attention.

Embiid pushed back on the story, and the broader point may be even more important than the specifics of one exchange. He has long been a lightning rod for media narratives, and this latest round only reinforces how quickly outside chatter can become part of the conversation around Philadelphia. For a team trying to settle in around its new mix of stars, the challenge is not just what happens on the court, but how much oxygen every sideline detail can consume. [Read more 🡒]

Sixers Lineup Choices In Boston Sent An Early Message

The preseason trip to Boston offered a clearer look at how the Sixers want to sort through the edges of their roster when the regulars are not all available. Philadelphia was shorthanded enough to make the night feel more like a lineup exercise than a true measuring stick, and the result was secondary to the chance to see how different pieces fit in a tougher road setting against a Celtics group that had its own new faces making an impression.

Dean Wade drew the start for Philadelphia and gave the staff a useful look at his defensive range, including time checking Jayson Tatum and sliding into a small-ball center role. The Sixers took the loss, but the bigger takeaway may have been that they came out of it without adding to their injury worries, which matters more in October than a preseason score ever could.
