Nick Nurse Has One Last 76ers Rotation Call To Make

As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for their preseason finale against the Boston Celtics, key players face pivotal opportunities to solidify their roles and impact the team's roster decisions.

The 76ers head into Friday’s preseason finale with a few important minutes still up for grabs, and a few players still trying to make sure their October work actually counts when the games start mattering.

Philadelphia hosts Boston on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., but the club still hasn’t been fully healthy at any point in the preseason, and availability for the finale remains uncertain. That leaves Nick Nurse with a clearer view of one thing: there are still spots to sort out before the regular season arrives.

Justin Edwards is one of the players who could use a strong finish. Through three exhibition games, he’s averaged 8.3 points while shooting 42.1% from the field and committing 2.7 turnovers. The decision-making has been uneven, and his perimeter defense hasn’t helped his case when he’s been on the floor with Philadelphia’s top players.

He did give the Sixers a spark late against Boston on Oct. 10, scoring all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter of Philadelphia’s 144-106 loss. Still, that kind of burst only goes so far.

His spot-up shooting has shown up - he’s hit 37.5% of his triples in the preseason - but the rest of the package hasn’t been there often enough. If he doesn’t take a step forward, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope could end up taking the reserve small forward minutes.

Labaron Philon Jr. entered camp as one of the early talking points, but the preseason hasn’t fully matched that buzz. The rookie has reached double figures once, including 14 points against Boston, but he’s shooting just 30% from the field overall and has had trouble scoring inside the arc.

That said, his issues don’t appear to be about adjusting to the NBA game. His ball-handling and pace already look usable at this level.

The bigger question is whether the shots start falling and whether he can stay patient. His shooting from deep, both on the ball and off it, has shown promise, and if he can put the pieces together, he could be in line for a look running the second unit.

Adem Bona is also a name to watch, especially with Ariel Hukporti’s season ending against the Knicks on Oct. 5. The Sixers need Bona more than ever, but he’s dealing with a left foot sprain and hasn’t played in the preseason.

Nick Nurse said Tuesday that Bona partially participated in practice. Dominick Barlow, who is dealing with back issues, did not practice. Anfernee Simons also remained a partial participant because of a hamstring injury, along with Bona.

If Bona gets on the floor against the Celtics, it would offer a preview of what Philadelphia’s non-Embiid minutes might look like. The 6-foot-10 big has battled foul trouble and rebounding issues across his two-year NBA career, and Boston is a tough test for that exact reason. The Celtics piled up 34 second-chance points against Philadelphia.

Holding his own against Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta would leave a strong impression.

Sixers Broadcast Just Added A Familiar NBA Voice For Game Coverage

NBC Sports Philadelphia is making a notable addition to its 76ers broadcast team, bringing in Tom Haberstroh as sideline reporter for the clubs live game coverage. Haberstroh, a familiar NBA voice to many viewers, is set to be on the floor for the teams final preseason game on October 16 before formally debuting on the regular-season opener on October 24.

The move gives the network another experienced presence around the team as it gears up for the season, while Amy Fadool will continue to have a major role as well. She is slated to serve as sideline reporter for select games and to lead the networks live gameday shows, giving Philadelphia viewers a broadcast setup with both continuity and a new wrinkle to watch once the games count. 76ers Suddenly Have A Backup Center Decision Fans Should Watch

Dominick Barlow has barely factored into the 76ers preseason to this point, and it is starting to look as if he may not get much of a chance to change that before opening night. Philadelphias rotation is still taking shape, but the team has clearly given more run to other frontcourt options as it sorts through who can fill the backup center spot behind the starters.

Jabari Walker and Dean Wade have both logged more playing time and appear to be ahead in the pecking order for now, which leaves Barlow in a tricky spot as the roster decisions tighten. With the regular season approaching, the 76ers still have time to sort through the details, but this is one of the quieter battles worth watching as the final rotation comes into focus. Sixers Get Pulled Into A LeBron Debate Fans Will Notice

Carmelo Anthony stepped into a fresh NBA side debate this week by defending LeBron James after scrutiny surfaced over James using a Fanatics-branded helicopter to travel between New York and Philadelphia. Anthony went after journalist Pablo Torre and unnamed league owners for raising questions about the arrangement, saying those doing the accusing should be willing to identify themselves publicly.

For Sixers fans, the conversation lands in familiar territory because Philadelphia is part of the travel route at the center of the discussion, and the noise has stirred the kind of salary cap speculation the league always has to navigate carefully. No wrongdoing has been established, but the situation has already turned into one of those off-court storylines that gets around fast in NBA circles and does not stay contained for long. [Read more 🡒]
