Bam Adebayo isn’t carrying any bitterness into the next chapter of the Miami Heat’s offseason, even after LeBron James chose Philadelphia over a return to South Beach.
At his camp on Sunday, Adebayo made it clear he still holds plenty of respect for James. “I’m cool with Bron,” Adebayo said, via Brendan Tobin.
“I consider Bron like a brother, honestly. We’ve been Olympic teammates, but even before that, we’ve always had down-to-earth conversations.
So I’m happy for him. You want what’s best for somebody, and that’s really how you go from there.”
Adebayo had already said he wasn’t bothered by James signing with the 76ers and even told his friend in a text message that he was going to bust his a** on the court.
James’ move gives Philadelphia a major boost. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game in 2025-26, and the two-year, $8 million deal has pushed the 76ers into the group of East favorites.
Miami, meanwhile, made the swing it needed. After missing the playoffs last season and falling in the first round in each of the two years before that, the Heat landed Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. Adebayo said he’s excited about what that kind of addition means for the team.
“You look forward to it,” Adebayo said. “You look forward to the excitement around the season.
I feel like Pat [Riley] has been trying to get somebody that star level for a while now. So, being able to have that shift and that change, we’re looking for growth.
We’re looking at obviously winning games and having some fun.”
Adebayo and Antetokounmpo were seen together in Las Vegas a day after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the trade, and the conversations between them sounded as straightforward as you’d expect from two players with the same goal.
“We’re ready to get to work,” Adebayo said. “The goal is to win a championship.
That’s his mindset. We have a like mindset when it comes to that.
So those conversations are really about winning.”
Antetokounmpo arrives after averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game in 2025-26. Even with that kind of firepower, Miami isn’t being treated like a clear title threat yet, with questions still lingering about the roster’s shooting and ball-handling.
Adebayo isn’t sweating the chatter.
“We’ll figure it out,” Adebayo said. “We don’t really worry about the outside noise too much. We’ve done a lot more with less in our past years before, so we’ll figure it out.”
The Heat have already shown they can run far beyond expectations, reaching the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023. In 2023, they got there as the East’s eighth seed. They came up short both times, but that history is part of why Miami believes it can punch above its weight again with Antetokounmpo in the fold.
Adebayo will have a major role in that push, too. He put up 20.1 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game in 2025-26, earned All-Defensive Second Team honors, and will be counted on to bring his best on that end of the floor.
