Rich Paul says the attention around LeBron James has become its own business, and the negative side of it is no accident.
On his Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman, the Klutch Sports CEO pointed to the way criticism of James reliably drives interest online. Paul has spent years around James, first as part of his inner circle in 2003 and then as his agent beginning in 2012 when he launched Klutch Sports Group. From that vantage point, he’s watched the same pattern repeat: LeBron remains a magnet for coverage, and the louder the criticism, the more people seem to click.
"I think somewhere in the algorithm somebody said ‘Hey, if you speak negatively about LeBron, people want to pay attention to you.’ I think that somewhere is in the manual of social media," Paul said on his Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman.
That kind of reaction has followed James for most of his career. As one of the most popular people in the world and the biggest name in the NBA over the past two decades, every move he makes gets amplified. His performances, his choices, and even a decision like signing with the Philadelphia 76ers this summer have all fueled nonstop conversation.
Paul’s point also fits the broader story of James’ career. Late in his first run with the Cleveland Cavaliers, he took heat for not winning a championship.
