LeBron's Sixers Deal Now Has An Off-Court Problem

As NBA owners scrutinize LeBron James's endorsement deal and unconventional travel arrangements, questions arise about potential salary cap manipulation.

LeBron James is drawing scrutiny over a reported Fanatics sponsorship tied to his helicopter travel, and the issue has apparently reached the league’s owner ranks.

According to the reporting, rival NBA owners noticed the high-end Fanatics branding on James’s helicopter and started wondering whether the arrangement could amount to a workaround around the NBA’s salary rules. That concern has reportedly led some of them to contact Pablo Torre, who says he is “looking into” a contract between the Philadelphia 76ers star and Fanatics that includes on-demand helicopter travel.

Torre said on a Tuesday episode of Front Office Sports’ Tuned In that he viewed the situation as “something of interest to the league.” He also told Front Office Sports’ Daniel Roberts, “We’re also getting tips from NBA owners, who are sending me your story, being like, ‘What is this?’”

Roberts reported that the Fanatics endorsement deal with James “extends to after his playing career is over.”

James signed a two-year, $8 million deal with a second-year player option earlier this summer. Last year with the Lakers, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game during the 2025-26 NBA season.

The move to helicopter travel had already made some fans uneasy because of the association with helicopters and what happened to Kobe Bryant. Now, beyond that concern, the sponsorship arrangement itself is the one that’s raising questions.

With Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown, the 76ers could run the table to get LeBron a ring before he retires.

Sixers Frontcourt Battle Just Got Murkier Before The Season Opens

Dominick Barlows early weeks with the 76ers have already been interrupted by back soreness, and the timing is less than ideal for a player trying to carve out space in a crowded frontcourt. He has not appeared in any preseason games, leaving him short on live reps as the exhibition schedule winds down and Philadelphia keeps sorting through its big-man mix.

Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti have also been dealing with injuries that have affected their availability, adding another layer of uncertainty to a group the Sixers hoped to evaluate before the games start counting. With preseason opportunities drying up, the team still has questions to answer in the paint, and Barlows situation only makes that evaluation more complicated. [Read more 🡒]

Sixers Still Have A Preseason Availability Problem Before The Games Count

The 76ers are still sorting through the kind of preseason availability issues that can linger longer than anyone wants, with Nick Nurse saying there is no timeline yet for Dominick Barlows return because of back soreness. Philadelphia is trying to get its group as close to whole as possible before the games start counting, and the status of several rotation and depth pieces remains part of the daily picture.

Anfernee Simons and Adem Bona both took part in practice in a limited way and could be in line to play in the final preseason game, which at least gives the team a chance to get a little more work in before opening night. Off the court, the organization also filled out its development pipeline, naming Brad Jones the general manager and CJ Marchesani the assistant general manager of the Delaware Blue Coats. Jaylen Brown Trade Just Sparked A Painful Celtics Debate

The Celtics decision to send Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George has already pushed Boston into a different conversation, one that goes well beyond simple star-for-star comparison. Around the league, the move has been framed as a bold attempt to retool around Jayson Tatum, and NBA analyst Kevin OConnor has already pointed to encouraging preseason signs, noting that Tatum and George looked comfortable together while Bostons new-look roster began taking shape.

Still, the excitement comes with real uncertainty, because Georges health and durability remain part of the equation every time the Celtics are discussed. Bostons identity changed quickly with the trade, and so did the pressure on the front offices bet: if the fit continues to click, the Celtics can chase the Easts top seed, but if the injuries follow George, the debate that started with Browns exit could get a lot louder.
