The Knicks and 76ers are headed into another chapter of a rivalry that already has a fresh playoff scar on Philadelphia’s side, and one rival executive isn’t exactly sold on how Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns will look against each other.
After New York’s 4-0 sweep of the 76ers in the second round of last year’s playoffs, the two division foes are back in the spotlight with both teams reshaped for what comes next. According to ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill, one NBA executive sees the Embiid-Towns matchup as a wash.
“They cancel each other out. Towns is too mobile for Embiid, and Joel is too physical, provided he plays that way.” When noting Embiid's health issues the past several years, the executive added, “I don't trust him at all.”
That skepticism is tied to what Philadelphia has already lived through. Embiid powered the 76ers through a desperate first-round comeback against the Boston Celtics, helping them erase a 3-1 deficit with three straight wins.
He delivered 33 points in Game 5 and 34 in Game 7, but the next round brought more trouble. Dealing with a right ankle sprain and hip soreness, he missed Game 4 against the Knicks, and New York closed out the sweep.
Now the Sixers are trying to turn the page with a dramatically altered roster, and Embiid is back in the lab as they prepare for a first shot at the defending champion Knicks. Before the NBA releases the 2026-27 regular-season schedule, Philadelphia fans are already circling that matchup, especially with Embiid set to return alongside LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
Goodwill wrote that the league’s upcoming schedule release will help frame the next round of heavyweight games, noting, “In the wake of James' decision - and with the NBA expected to release its full 2026-27 schedule later this month - ESPN spent the past week speaking with several executives, scouts and coaches about the matchups, schemes and stars that could decide Knicks-76ers: the team that knows itself versus the team learning something new every day,”
One East assistant coach pointed to how much Philadelphia still has to figure out on the fly. “You have to approach this from scratch,” an East assistant coach said of Philadelphia's approach to the season. “When you start playing, there's certain things you can't teach that you've learned over the years that are [instinctual] when you have a veteran or chemistry-laden team.”
There’s also the Knicks’ own roster change to factor in, with starting center Mitchell Robinson gone. Even so, the buzz around this series is already building, and Knicks-76ers could land on Opening Night when the league finally unveils the schedule.
