That optimism comes after a busy stretch for Philadelphia, which has added depth pieces such as Anfernee Simons and Ariel Hukporti while also landing Brown in a blockbuster deal. The result is a roster that looks very different from the one that reached the Eastern Conference semifinals last season.
That run ended in a four-game sweep at the hands of the eventual champion New York Knicks, though Philadelphia got there by knocking off the Boston Celtics in a seven-game underdog series. Now the conversation around the Sixers has shifted.
They’re no longer being framed as the surprise team trying to hang around. They’re being talked about as a group with real Finals-level ambition.
Brown’s recent track record helps explain why. Last season, he was a central figure for the Celtics while Jayson Tatum recovered from an Achilles tear suffered in the previous playoffs. Brown responded with a career scoring year, averaging 28.7 points per game and matching his career high in rebounds.
